2020-04-24

The Structures and Hydraulics and Environment Departments of LNEC, together with the Institute of Science and Innovation in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering (INEGI) and ANA – Airports of Portugal SA participate, since February 2019 in the MEGE – Structural Monitoring of Large Structures project (PROCIÊNCIA 2020).

This project aims, in what concerns the maritime protection works for the airport runway, to develop a system for monitoring the structural condition of the protection seawall of the airport infrastructure in Santa Cruz (Madeira Island Airport) and of the "Posto de Socorros a Náufragos” (PSN – lifeguard station) breakwater.

The Hydraulics and Environment Department has, among others, the task of systematic visual observation of the breakwater of the maritime embankment for protecting the airport runway pillars and of the PSN breakwater, whose structures are under the jurisdiction of ANA.
