The Ria de Aveiro littoral is considered a flood-prone urban region. Despite some ambiguity about the future climate conditions in the coming decades it is expected that climate changes will strongly change hydrodynamics and morphodynamics in coastal and river environments. These scenarios clearly show that comprehensive and efficient approaches for the analysis, evaluation and management of flooding risk are necessary in order to back the emergencies plans and the urban planning and management systems.

Adjustments to Strengthen Stability of Submarine Outfalls in Muddy Soils (AREDIS) 
The project aims to develop techniques to deal with the problems in the construction of submarine outfalls in regions with soil that could be classified as low quality or low resistance material, for being composed of fine material (clay and mud). Despite the experience with structures built on muddy soils, settlement problems, scour and liquefaction still present considerable uncertainty.
The main objectives of the project are:
To achieve these two general objectives, an experimental programme is proposed for understanding the processes of scour and liquefaction that give rise to submarine outfall settlement and failure.
From this experimental work practical solutions are expected to be obtained for the design of submarine outfalls on muddy soils, specifically focusing on the foundation, on the settlement of structures and, if the research so determines, on the development of especial types of parts to place on the foundation and bottom of the outfalls to improve stability by assimilating the potential penetration.
The project also seeks to prepare a set of recommendations from the study for use in applied engineering.

- To apply the acquired knowledge to solve the typical problems of the construction and exploitation of submarine outfalls on muddy soils.

AQUAGIS-Mon – Autonomous robotic platform for surface water bodies monitoring
The catamaran is equipped with a weather station, a water quality probe (that can dive up to 8m depths), an acoustic doppler current profiler (ADCP) and a water sampler.
An information system platform was developed to support the collection, organisation, storage, analysis and publication of continuously hydrologic observations based on a SOAP and REST web-services architecture. These data services (based on WaterML - Water Markup Language), and the corresponding metadata information published in the Internet, allow users to discover and consume water observations and measurements into the most popular analysis platforms, like MS Excel®, R, Matlab® or ArcGIS®. This methodology reduces considerable the use of valuable personal time and resources to discover and access hydrologic data for research and water management.
To discover and access hydrologic and weather data to be used in research and water resources management actions can be a complex and timely task. This task usually requires the identification and inquiry of several data repositories, each one implementing different methods to explore and access the data.
New advances in cyber-infrastructures and semantic mediation technologies offer the means to create better tools that support the discovery and access to hydrologic data. With this information infrastructure to control, register and publish data we pretend to offer an efficient way to discover, download, manage, visualize and analyze the hydrologic data acquired by the catamaran.
The information system that supports the catamaran allows the programming and monitoring mission control, the registration of data and the publication of data time series online, based on data standards such as WaterML.
Onboard control infrastructure
The central system to control the vessel chosen was the MOOS (Mission Orientated Operating Suite). The MOOS was chosen by the fact that is the one of the most used platforms for oceanographic autonomous applications (UMV e UUV). This platform complies with all the requirements for the AquaGIS-Mon platform in terms of control, autonomous navigation and mission planning and execution.
Navigation Sensors
For navigation control purposes there are sensors (under and above the waterline) providing information to the onboard navigation system. This system makes decisions about navigation routes and water sensors readings based on the navigation sensors.
The security requirements are:
The propulsion system is responsible for thrust and position maintenance, even under the influence of currents and winds. The calculations were based on a 3 Knots (~5.6 Km/h) of current against vessel navigation bearing; the vessel should be capable of maintain a 3knots real velocity.
In absolute terms the vessel should be capable to reach a velocity of 6 knots (~11.1 Km/h), without the influence of winds and current.
Communication System
The main communication channel has enough bandwidth to support the following communication channels:
The vessel implements a redundant communication system that allows a permanent remote command and monitoring in a failure scenario of the main communication system.
The first navigation tests have used a scale physical model (1/5) and were tested at LNEC facilities (fig. 1 and 2).
For the hydrologic data management (acquisition, communication and online publication) a information system infrastructure was implemented. This infrastrure is based on 3 main components:

The R&D Project aims to development an autonomous catamaran vessel for surface water monitoring, configurable enough to deal specifically with the Water Framework Directive (WFD) monitoring requirements (European Commission, 2003) established in the European River Basin Management Plans (RBMP).
Since the fixed monitoring sites can only offer a restricted sampling of the water body conditions, we have developed an innovative autonomous robotic vessel capable to observe and measure water quality and hydromorphological elements on rivers, estuaries and reservoirs. This platform was conceived to be used in narrow (a few meters) to large systems and in a variety of depths, having the ability to monitor obstacles and handles sharp bathymetric, geometric and hydrodynamic variations.

- Geographic area limits for the monitoring mission. If during mission the vessel postpones these limits, the navigation system sets a security mode (turns off motors and send a localization beacon);
- Implement a life signal emission (5 seconds of frequency) to the operations centre using a communication channel. If the signal isn’t sent the vessel enters in security mode. The vessel implements an AIS location beacon.
- The vessel must have a collision avoidance route calculator (COLREG rules) ;
- The vessel should navigate through geographic coordinates and always know its position.

- Realtime communications of imagens from the sensoring optic unit (3 stream 640x490 compression H.264 at 5 fps ~3x240 kbps= 720kbps);
- Radar image (2 fps equivalent: ~96 kbps);
- Navigation sensors and status of the water sensors (5 data packages of 2kb: ~80 kbps);

Hydrologic Data InfrastructureFor the hydrologic data management (acquisition, communication and online publication) a information system infrastructure was implemented. This infrastrure is based on 3 main components:
- HydroServer, to store, organize and publish data and metadata;
- HISCentral, to harvest metadata from hydroservers and enable efficient data search by client applications;
- HydroDesktop, provides users a convenient way to search, map, graph and analise data.

Abstract
This proposal aims to integrate complementary research strengths at the National Civil Engineering Laboratory (LNEC, Portugal) and the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU, U.S.A.) towards the timely prediction of the fate of oil spills in coastal zones, in support of the early warning of these accidents and the corresponding risk assessment. The research will consist of (a) parallelization of an innovative oil spill code developed at LNEC; (b) cross-assessment of that code with a lower-complexity oil spill code developed at OHSU; (c) exploration of strategies that combine different complexity codes into an effective automated nowcast-forecast system for oil spills. Each partner will provide its respective oil spill code, and both partners will collaborate in (i) the parallelization of the LNEC code, (ii) the cross-assessment of the codes; and (iii) the pilot integration of the codes in a nowcast-forecast modeling system for one of the largest and most important estuaries in the USA – the Columbia River estuary.
The specific goals of the project are 1) to transfer LNEC's knowledge on oil spill and short wave codes to OHSU, 2) to continue to transfer OHSU's knowledge on nowcast-forecast systems and on parallelization of numerical codes to LNEC, 3) to explore, through the example of the Columbia River estuary, strategies that leverage the use of a hierarchy of codes of different complexity and cost into an highly effective predictive system to assist risk analysis and emergency response in the event of an oil spill and 4) to reinforce the existing working collaborations between LNEC and OHSU, through the identification of long-term common research goals and associated funding mechanisms. This project will be an integral component of the NSF Science and Technology Center for Coastal Margin Observation and Prediction (CMOP), a multi-institutional research center led by the American partner.
The project also involves a suite of educational activities at OHSU targeting LNEC’s researchers at different stages of their careers, and OHSU graduate students. These researchers and students will benefit from the mentoring of an interdisciplinary network of experts in estuarine and coastal analysis at both institutions, thereby gaining early career introductions to a wide range of areas such as numerical modeling, real-time observations, cyber-infrastructure, ecological research, and oil spill processes and their integration in ocean observing systems. Participation in workshops such as the annual ELCIRC/SELFE users’ meeting and the 12th Estuarine and Coastal Modeling Conference will provide an additional opportunity for these students to exchange their experience with other colleagues in the same field of research and to provide them with a network of contacts.

COALA - Nutrients and particulate matter dynamics. Exchanges between a coastal lagoon and the adjacent ocean through a multiple inlet system: the case of Ria Formosa, south of Portugal
The Ria Formosa is a lagoon system in the south coast of Portugal, having several permanent connections to the ocean. It is a highly productive ecosystem, of great ecological diversity and due to that it has been recognised very important at both a European and an International level by its acceptance as part of the Natura 2000 European network for nature conservation and a Ramsar wetland, included in the Special Bird Protection Area.
In order to deepen the knowledge about the global productivity of the Ria Formosa system it is imperative understand the dynamics of nutrients, chlorophyll a (as a proxy of phytoplankton) and particulate matter (organic and inorganic) and predict their spatial-temporal evolution. A key point of this dynamics is the mass exchanges that occur in the boundary water masses, in particular the exchanges between this system and the adjacent ocean through the inlets. There are some studies about this subject, despite not quantifying the exchanges between the Ria Formosa and the ocean, regardless the mention of the importance of this issue.
This study aims to characterize the spatial distribution and the temporal scales of variability of these key parameters (nutrients, chlorophyll-a and suspended matter concentrations) within the Ria Formosa. The main goals of this project are the understanding of the dynamic of these compounds, particularly related with the mass exchanges between the Ria Formosa lagoon and the ocean and its influence upon the biological productivity of this important ecosystem.
This project involves a multidisciplinary team, composed by two main groups: one integrates the Marine and Environmental Research Center of the University of Algarve (CIMA) having a lot of experience of field work and modelling, in several scientific areas such as Oceanography, Marine and Environmental Chemistry, Coastal Hydrodynamics and Morphodynamics and Remote Sensing. This experience has been acquired and applied in several scientific projects namely in the Ria Formosa. The other group is composed by investigators from the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering (LNEC), working in environmental modelling, particularly in the development and application of coastal and estuarine circulation, ecological as well as particle tracking models. The LNEC team has conducted several works on the application of models to various coastal systems including Ria Formosa.
The objectives of this work will be reached through a methodology that involves a close connection between field work and modelling. This project will be innovative, integrating the analysed parameters simultaneously with water fluxes that will provide the tidal prisms and the global transports through the inlets. Several field campaigns in the main inlets of Ria Formosa, during spring and neap tides and during contrasting periods of the year will contribute to extend the knowledge about the spatial distributions and seasonal variability of those concentrations within the lagoon, the exchanges through the inlets and the major forcing factors. Field data will further be used to calibrate a 3D hydrodynamic model that will be able to predict distinct situations other than those of the field campaigns and to better understand this complex ecosystem. Moreover, the application of a hydrodynamic model to reproduce identified situations will help the rational planning of the field surveys, reducing both the financial budget and the global human effort of the project. The combined use of the hydrodynamic model with a particle tracking model will give a more detailed spatial-temporal characterization of the analysed parameters. This application will also strengthen the capacity of the team in the simulation and forecast of the study issues. Furthermore, the use of ocean colour satellite imagery will help the data analysis, particularly regarding the chlorophyll-a distributions in and out of Ria Formosa, which have a strong influence on the distribution as well as in the direction of the nutrient exchanges through the inlets. The satellite images will also give valuable information for the boundary conditions to use in the models applications.

ControlSed - Control of sedimentation in reservoirs induced by turbidity currents
The main objective of ControlSed project was to evaluate the efficiency of using obstacles to control reservoir sedimentation due to turbidity currents. These obstacles can be built as submerged embankment dams that will block partially or totally the flow and cause the fine sediment to settle preventing the currents to deposit near intakes and outlets. The project included two different approaches: laboratorial experiments and numerical model development.
