Transportation Department
Framework
The Transportation Department, one of LNEC department units, was created in 1979, under the designation of Transportation Networks Department.
In accordance with the present LNEC Statutes, this Department has competences in the areas of Roads, Airports and Railways; Road Traffic and Safety; as well as Transportation Planning and Economy.
Within the framework of those competences, the activity developed at the Department is basically divided into planned research projects, studies under contract and other scientific and technical activities.
Main fields of activity
The R&D activities under way at the Transportation Department basically refer to two scientific areas of LNEC: Transportations and Roads, Railways and Airfields, which are broken down into four major lines:
- Transportation infra-structures: Building materials and techniques;
- Transportation infra-structures: Observation of the behaviour and modelling;
- Road traffic and safety;
- Transportations, sustainable development and environmental quality.
The first two are mainly conducted at the Road and Airport Infra-structures Division and, more recently, also at the Railway Infra-structures Division and the last two at the Planning, Traffic and Road Safety Division of this Department.
