Wave RUN-UP Measurements under very oblique wave incidence
Under the scope of the HYDRALAB+ transnational access project, the so-called RODBreak experiment was conducted in the multidirectional wave basin at the Marienwerden facilities of the Leibniz University Hannover (LUH). A stretch of a rubble-mound breakwater was built in the wave basin with a very gentle slope. Its armour layer was made of Antifer cubes, at the roundhead and adjoining trunk, and of rock, at the rest of the trunk. A set of tests was carried out to extend the range of wave steepness values analysed in wave run-up, vertopping and armour layer stability studies, focusing on oblique extreme wave conditions, with incident wave angles from 40º to 90º. The present study focuses on the analysis of measured wave run-up values obtained in the tests and on their on their variability as well as the influence of the wave obliquity and directional spreading.

3D survey modelling for damage assessment in rubble-mound breakwaters under oblique wave incidence
Several authors have proposed guidelines on how to consider the effects of oblique waves on the stability of armour layers of rubble-mound breakwaters. Especially for very oblique waves, for which the increase in stability is the largest, limited data are available. Under the scope of the HYDRALAB+ transnational access project RODBreak, experiments were conducted in a tank at the Marienwerder facilities of the Leibnitz University Hannover (LUH), comprising measurements of sea waves, runup, overtopping and armour layer damage of a rubble-mound breakwater under oblique extreme wave conditions. This paper focuses on the analysis of damage evolution of the breakwater roundhead subject to these conditions, on the novelty of the nonintrusive survey methodologies and on the advance in knowledge on roundhead stability.

A RANS-VoF numerical model to analyze the output power of an OWC-WEC equipped with wells and impulse turbines in a hypothetical sea-state
Wave energy is a renewable source with significant amount in relation to the global demand. A good concept of a device applied to extract this type of energy is the onshore oscillating water column wave energy converter (OWC-WEC). This study shows a numerical analysis of the diameter determination of two types of turbines, Wells and Impulse, installed in an onshore OWC device subjected to a hypothetical sea state. Commercial software FLUENT, which is based on RANS-VoF (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations and Volume of Fluid technique), is employed. A methodology that imposes air pressure on the chamber, considering the air compressibility effect, is used. The mathematical domain consists of a 10 m deep flume with a 10 m long and 10 m wide OWC chamber at its end (geometry is similar to that of the Picos plant installed in Azores islands, Portugal). On the top of the chamber, a turbine works with air exhalation and inhalation induced by the water free surface which oscillates due to the incident wave. The hypothetical sea state, represented by a group of regular waves with periods from 6 to 12 s and heights from 1.00 to 2.00 m (each wave with an occurrence frequency), is considered to show the potential of the presented methodology. Maximum efficiency (relation between the average output and incident wave powers) of 46% was obtained by using a Wells turbine with diameter of 2.25 m, whereas efficiency was 44% by an Impulse turbine with diameter of 1.70 m.

Experiences with SWASH on modelling wave propagation over vegetation: comparisons with lab and field data
The vegetation capacity to protect the coasts from wave action is becoming more important and attractive due to ongoing sea level rise and increasing storminess. In addition, it is a quite environmentally friendly way. Quantifying the vegetation effect in wave propagation will be relevant for coastal management. A non-hydrostatic wave model based on the nonlinear shallow water equations, SWASH, offers opportunities to quantify the wave dissipation effect in vegetation fields. However, limited applications of SWASH addressing this subject can be found in the literature and therefore it is important to enhance the existing knowledge on the model behaviour. In this research, in order to understand the characteristics of the SWASH model further, the model is applied to reproduce the significant wave height (Hs ) evolution over vegetation fields measured in flume experiments and in field campaign. Overall, SWASH performed very well in reproducing the Hs evolution measured both in the laboratory and in the field. In the case of flume data, the statistical scores MBE, RMSE and MRE, showed that the SWASH performance clearly improved when increasing the number of vertical layers assumed in the simulations. In the case of field data, considering a vegetation factor (Vf ) between 0.1 and 0.5, that represents the overall effect of scarcely known numerical vegetation parameters, led to a fairly good SWASH performance in modelling the Hs evolution over vegetation.

Experimental investigation of the flow field in the vicinity of an oscillating wave surge converter
The main objective of this paper is to characterize the flow field on the front face of an oscillating wave surge converter (OWSC) under a regular wave. For this purpose, the longitudinal and vertical velocity components were measured using an Ultrasonic velocity Profiler (UVP). In order to explain the main trends of the OWSCs dynamics, the experimental data were firstly compared with the analytical results of potential theory. A large discrepancy was observed between experimental and analytical results, caused by the nonlinear behavior of wave-OWSC interaction that determine the turbulent field and the boundary layer. The experimental velocity field shows a strong ascendant flow generated by the mass transfer over the flap (overtopping) and flow rotation generated by the beginning of the flap deceleration and acceleration. These features overtopping and flow rotation) have an important role on the power capture of OWSC and, therefore, analytical results are not accurate to describe the complex hydrodynamics of OWSC.

Numerical analysis of an onshore oscillating water column wave energy converter for different wall slopes
An alternative to the energy matrix expansion, due to the increase of global electricity demand, is the renewable sea wave energy source, which has high energy potential. The Oscillating Water Column (OWC) converter is one of the most studied, although it is not yet used at commercial scale. Therefore, searching the optimal geometric configuration is fundamental to turn this device viable. This study proposes a numerical analysis of an onshore OWC for different slopes of chamber walls (from 40o to 90o) and equipped with a Wells turbine. Simulations of incompressible 2D flows are performed by means of the FLUENT® software, which is based on Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations. The k-? turbulence model and the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method are employed. Analyses of the behavior of run up/down in the front wall, sloshing inside the chamber and the energy balance of the OWC are carried out for incident waves with periods from 6 to 12 s and height of 1.5 m. Chamber with wall slope of 40o reaches the highest extracted energy (EE) at wave periods of 9 s and 10.5 s (70% of the incident wave energy) and higher run-up/down on the front wall and sloshing inside the chamber. However, chamber with wall slope of 90o has more regularity of EE at the range of wave periods, which allows concluding that the choice of the optimal wall slope depends mainly on the sea state characteristics.

Numerical analysis of the influence of air compressibility effects on an oscillating water column wave energy converter chamber
The most studied device used for extracting wave energy is the Oscillating Water Column (OWC). In general, numerical simulations of these cases by means of models based on Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations adopt the Volume of Fluid method to deal with the free surface flow which is considered incompressible in both water and air. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of the compressibility effect on the air inside the OWC chamber by the FLUENT® numerical model. A methodology is implemented, taking into account both water and air flows incompressible, but, at every instant, a pressure condition is imposed on the top boundary of the chamber to consider the compressibility effect. This pressure condition is based on an analytical equation that considers the isentropic transformation of the air and effects of Wells and impulse turbines. Results of compressible and incompressible numerical models are compared. The amplification factor, the root mean square of air pressure inside the chamber and OWC efficiency in relation to incident wave period, wave height and turbine characteristic relation are analyzed. Results show that air compressibility effects can diminish the predicted OWC efficiency up to about 20% in both Wells and impulse turbines.

Measuring armour layer damage in rubble-mound breakwaters under oblique wave incidence
This paper presents a set of scale-model tests carried out to extend the range of wave steepness values analyzed in wave run-up, overtopping and armour layer stability studies, focusing on oblique extreme wave conditions and on their effects on a gently sloping breakwater trunk armour and roundhead. A stretch of a rubble-mound breakwater (head and part of the adjoining trunk, with a slope of 1(V):2(H)) was built in a wave basin at the Leibnitz Universität Hannover to assess, under extreme wave conditions (wave steepness of 0.055) with different incident wave angles (from 40º to 90º), the structure behaviour in what concerns wave run-up, wave overtopping and damage progression of the armour layers, composed by rock and Antifer cubes. Non-intrusive methodologies were used for the assessment of armour layer damage evolution, including a laser scanning technique, stereo photogrammetry and a Kinect© motion sensor. The aim of the present work is to characterize damage evolution, based upon surveys carried out with the Kinect© motion sensor, for 4 of the 11 test series conducted during the test program.

Modelling wave propagation over vegetation fields with SWASH
The ultimate goal of applying SWASH in the present work is to compare SWASH wave height results with laboratory results presented in Løvås (2000) and with field observations of Vo-Luong and Massel (2008) as well. Additionally, SWASH results will be also compared to the ones previously obtained by other empirical and numerical models (Mendez and Losada, 2004; Suzuki et al., 2012). Preliminary SWASH wave height simulations for breaking random waves over vegetation have shown an overall good agreement to the flume data presented in Løvås (2000). The agreement between SWASH and flume results looked worst at the wave breaking zone, which seems to be improved through a better wave breaking parametrization.

Physical modelling of wave-induced plant drag coefficient
Most of the previous studies on wave propagation over vegetation fields estimated drag coefficients (CD) for rigid and flexible plants by the so called calibration method which gave similar CD for both types of plants. However, CD may actually be considerably different when the drag force is directly measured. In order to investigate the wave dissipation and CD further, flume experiments for wave propagation over vegetation are conducted with a special focus on the benchmark single cylinder test that calculates CD by direct measurements in single rigid and flexible artificial plants.

Risk forecast system for a moored ferry ship in S. Roque do Pico port
In this paper, the development of such system, called SWAMS ALERT, is detailed and an illustration on how it applies to a real port is presented, namely the port of S. Roque do Pico. SWAMS ALERT is as risk forecast and management system for the safety of transiting ships and moored ships in ports and harbors. This system can be fine-tuned to a specific port, thus becoming a valuable tool to help in the selection of docking and mooring devices. SWAMS ALERT extends the functionality of the wave overtopping events forecast system HIDRALERTA to include the ships safety related events. It was first tailored to the Praia da Vitória Port and is now being developed for the ports of S. Roque do Pico, Madalena do Pico.

Sines breakwater harbour: the OSOM+ monitoring program
Since 1986, the National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC) has developed a program for Systematic Observation of Maritime Works (OSOM) for the structures under the responsibility of the former Port and Maritime Transport Institute (IPTM).The objective of this program is to monitor the behavior of the structures and recommend timely interventions for their maintenance and/or repair. Recently, with the acquisition by LNEC of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV, or drone), a number of structural surveys have been carried out to complement the information obtained in above mentioned visual observation campaigns. The UAV provides more detailed and accurate information on the state of the structures. It also allows the assessment of the evolution of structures envelopes, as well as the production of representative profiles of the more problematic zones of such structures. On the other hand, the migration of the existing ANOSOM database to a WEB-based online platform was carried out, with a mobile app which assists the visual campaigns while also giving online access to all the information related to each maritime structure. All these new capabilities are now part of the so-called OSOM+, which methodologies will be described in this paper, with the study case of Sines breakwater harbours. The new features of OSOM+ described in this paper clearly contribute to a better and more efficient program of systematic observation of maritime works. Periodic visual observation campaigns complemented with drone observations allow a sounder determination of the Current, Evolution and Risk States of the structures and a more complete feeding of the ANOSOM_WEB database. During campaigns, the use of the mobile application in situ also streamlines the process. In the end, both the provider of this information (LNEC) and the end-users, namely Port Authority Administrations, benefit from a more accurate information on the state of the structures in a predominantly quantitative nature.

Three-dimensional surface models of breakwaters, obtained from drone surveys. From the prothotype to the laboratory
The recent acquisition of an UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), or drone, has enriched ongoing LNECs Systematic Observation of Maritime Works program (OSOM+) making it possible to use aerial photographic surveys along traditional information obtained in terrestrial visual observation campaigns. Actually, by making use of three-dimensional models of the breakwater provided by the drone, this new information allows a more detailed, qualitative analysis of the condition of the structures, namely a comparative analysis between surveys, regarding eroded volumes and damage progression between campaigns. Also, the same methodology may be adapted to be used in laboratory, for three-dimensional physical scale models of breakwaters, as the ones conducted at LNEC. Also here, the main goal is to obtain envelopes and profiles of the breakwater, allowing the evaluation of the eroded volume and area, of the eroded depth and of the non-dimensional damage parameter. The objective of this paper is therefore to present the capabilities of the surveys obtained by drone both in situ and in laboratory, based on the experience gained outside. To illustrate the methodology, results from the comparison between two surveys of Ericeira's breakwater conducted in 2013 and in 2018, as well as results on the comparison between profiles from a survey conducted on a three-dimensional physical scale model of a breakwater (Leixões) will be shown in this paper.
