Areas of Research / Interest

The main areas of interest involve hydrology and river hydraulics, hydraulic structures, water resources management and dam risk management. In this context, the following activities are emphasized:
  • Hydrological modelling and application of statistical tools in hydrology
  • Development and application of numerical models in river hydraulics and sediment transport; namely levee and dam failure floods
  • Physical, experimental and numerical modelling of flows in hydraulic structures, in particular in spillways
  • Inspection and monitoring of hydraulic structures and definition of methodologies in the scope of hydraulic and operational safety of dams
  • Dam risk management support, definition of methodologies and development of instruments for emergency planning and warning systems at dam and in downstream valleys

Research and Professional Activity

  • Participation in 39 national and international research projects with external funding (of the United Nation Development Program, World Bank, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, 5th, 6th, 7th and Horizon 2020 of the European Commission Programs, US National Science Program as well as for Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology)
