1.1. OBJECTIVES

The main objectives of the Project are:

  1. Development of a prototype of an integrated system, appropriated to help in the decision-making process in coastal engineering studies, using GIS huge capabilities. The system must be modular, to enable its easy expansion, must be built as a single application and be able to coordinate the tasks related with the running of the models (including automatic procedures for visualization and analysis of data and results that are relevant for the decision-making process);
  2. Assessment of the errors associated with the use of the system and their influence in the decision-making process: errors associated with e.g. bathymetric interpolations, data transfer between grids of different resolutions, model coupling, or simplification of physical boundaries;
  3. Development of an extension for emergency situations for the Sines harbour, including the simulation of several scenarios in order to build risk maps;
  4. Establishment of guidelines for coastal engineering studies with numerical models.

1.2. METHODOLOGY

The main objective of this project is to develop a system, flexible and expandable, with an integrated user interface. Flexible, since it enables different uses, expandable since its application can be widened to other coastal zone themes and integrated since it enables in a single graphical interface the convergence of a number of different interrelated numerical models.

The System will be developed by using a commercial software of geographical information system using VBA programming language. The recommendations of OPEN-MI initiative will be considered in coupling the necessary numerical models. In order to guarantee the accuracy and robustness of the system in the decision-making process, the errors that might exist in the various levels, such as the associated to the used algorithms, to the model coupling, to the area discretization and to the interpolation of data between different resolution grids, will be evaluated.

In order to extend the applicability of the system to the whole Portuguese coast, the bathymetry of the coastal zone of Portugal and the coastline corresponding to the main tide levels will be included in the prototype.

Following the prototype task, the system will be extended support to the emergency plan of the Port of Sines. Existing data (definition of the current situation of the port in we will have of physical borders, future and existing infrastructures) will be used for an integrated evaluation of the risk associated to the port, and the risk will be estimated. A real time version of this system is also envisaged in this project.

1.3. RESULTS

In summary, the main contributions of this Project are:

  • The development of an integrated system for wave propagation modeling for the Portuguese coast, that is GIS based;
  • Its extension for the support of emergency situations in Sines harbor;
  • Assessment of the errors associated to the utilization of these kind of systems, their influence in the decision-making, and implementation of the respective mitigation measures;
  • Advanced formation of young researchers;
  • Collaboration between research institutions with different vocations.

1.4. GUIOMAR STRUCTURE

GUIOMAR is composed of three main components:

  1. a GIS commercial software;
  2. a set of wave propagation numerical models (REF/DIF 1, REF/DIF S, FUNWAVE 1D e 2D, DREAMS and SWAN) and a non structure grid generation model, GMALHA.);
  3. an interface that is responsible for the communication between the user and the system.
