> Introduction
Stone & Ceramics Division
The Stone & Ceramics Division (NPC) of the Materials Department of LNEC in Lisbon, Portugal was formed from the merger of previous sectors that studied ceramic materials and stone. Its activity covers the following products:
- natural stone and reconstructed stone for construction;
- ceramic materials for construction;
- stone, ceramics and other porous materials in the built heritage.
Work includes the development of research projects, consultancy for paying clients, tests and the experimental development of products.
Studies and consultancy work related with the conservation of stone in the built heritage are a distinctive competence of the Division and LNEC has been, through NPC or the previous Stone Sector, a partner in several important EU-funded research projects in which it teamed with leading research groups in other countries.
In its consultancy activity, the Division (or the previous Stone Sector) has completed or is presently involved in work related with the conservation of some of the most meaningful, better-known and paradigmatic monuments of the Built Heritage of Portugal.
