In-situ assessment of important existing structures IP LESSLOSS/ Sub Project 5 A progress report
Much work in Earthquake Engineering was devoted to the improvement of earthquake resistant design of new structures. In several years EN 1998 will be the main seismic code for all European countries. But it is well known, that in many large earthquakes older existing structures cause much more casualties and damages than new structures. It is certainly not possible to retrofit all existing structures, but agreement exists, that assessment and retrofit of safety - critical structures and lifeline structures must have priority. In September 2004 the European Integrated Research Project LESSLOSS on Risk Mitigation for Earthquakes and Landslides was started. The project will run for three years and comprises 13 Sub-Projects (SP´s). The consortium consists of 46 partners (see http:\\www.lessloss.org). LESSLOSS SP5 is on In-situ Assessment, Monitoring and Typification of buildings and Infrastructure. The project partners of SP5 are ARS, CESI, LNEC, RWTH and VCE. This Sub Project focuses mainly on the assessment of important existing structures and tries to integrate experimental methods into the assessment procedure. The progress of SP5 obtained in the first year is summarized in this paper. Highlights presented by the partners are mentioned and the assessment of Hospital Innsbruck is presented in more detail. The most innovative task of LESSLOSS/ SP5 is the update of vulnerability estimates via monitoring, which was also started in the first year. In the second year the elaboration of the European Manual for insitu Assessment of the Earthquake Resistance of Important Existing Structures was started. The manual includes also a methodology to define the necessary assessment procedure for each actual situation.

Leaching Tests Performed on Low Strength Concrete
The leachability study was made using a low strength concrete containing fly ash, with a compressive strength of 16.3 MPa intended to facilitate the leaching and the subsequent quantification of the hazardous metals released. The leachability tests were performed in the following samples: on cement, on a mixture of cement with fly ash, on ground concrete; and on a monolithic concrete cube. Two methods were used: static leaching; and dynamic leaching with the aim of determining relationships between the leachability of heavy metals from the individual components of cement and fly ash, and from concrete itself. The leachates at 7, 14, 28 and 63 days were characterized for the following metals: cadmium, lead, chromium, nickel, copper and zinc. From the leachability results it was concluded that only cadmium had concentrations below the detection limit of the analytical method, and that chromium, copper and zinc were the metals most prone to be leached. Leachates from concrete cubes with higher time of cure show higher concentrations of metals than concrete with less time of cure

Numerical modeling of the drainage system of concrete dam foundations
In this paper a study about two-dimensional numerical modeling of the drainage system of concrete dam foundations is presented. The steady state seepage flows towards a single drain and through a horizontal layer in a dam foundation are analyzed numerically. From the comparison between analytical solutions and FLAC results some conclusions are taken about the effect of representing the drain by its axis, the choice of mesh size in the vicinity of the drain, and the errors in discharges and heads when the drainage system is modeled as a continuous plane in 3D models. An example of application to the study of flow in an arch dam foundation is presented.
