Global and local geometrical imperfections of pultruded GFRP profiles based on a modal approach
ABSTRACT - The ultimate capacity of pultruded glass fibre reinforced polymer (pGFRP) profiles depends significantly on geometrical imperfections (GIs), given their sensitivity to buckling phenomena arising from both thin walls and low elastic moduli. However, GIs are not yet comprehensively addressed in design guidance. This paper proposes a new approach to characterize the initial GIs of pGFRP profiles based on a modal approach. Given the lack of comprehensive knowledge in this area, this study presents a highly accurate and robust methodology to measure GIs and dimensional deviations (DDs) in pGFRP profiles using a 3D contact coordinate measurement machine (CMM). The modal approach encompasses the measurement of dimensional parameters and a point cloud transformation that enables the assessment of GIs associated with pure buckling modes of pGFRP profiles. This procedure allows the quantification of three types of global GIs associated to (i) minor-axis (weak axis), (ii) major-axis (strong axis) bending, and (iii) twist. Additionally, the procedure also includes the assessment of local GIs, considering the wall (plate-like) imperfections. The separation of GIs into these four types (shape and amplitude) is of major relevance as its paves the way to the development of analytical design formulas for the strength prediction of pGFRP members. The approach described in this paper also serves two important purposes: (i) the statistical analysis of DDs and GIs of pGFRP members, and (ii) the identification of distinct shapes and amplitudes of GIs that form the basis for reliable design considerations of pGFRP members.

2DH modelling and mapping of surfbeat-driven flooding in the shadow of a jettied tidal inlet
Near estuaries and harbours, submerged shoals and defence structures impact the exposure to overtopping. These features may be accounted for in two-dimensional horizontal (2DH) numerical models, either based on phase resolving or phase-average solvers for wave propagation. In between, surfbeat solvers, such as in XBeach, combine an affordable computational cost with the ability to generate and propagate the longer infragravity (IG) waves. However, surfzone wave characteristics and the overtopping exposure modelled with XBeach are sensi tive to settings such as the shape of the forcing wave spectra and the numerical scheme for wave propagation. The present paper explores this sensitivity and assesses the performance of different inundation models built with the 2DH surfbeat solver of XBeach. These models were forced with downscaled water levels and directional wave spectra and the results fuelled a discussion bounded by data collected downdrift of the entrance to the harbour of Figueira da Foz (Portugal). The original second-order upwind scheme, which propagates short-waves with a lower numerical diffusion improved the model performance in terms of long-wave height, and an unconventional breaking criterion better represented the cross-shore distribution of short-wave height near the shore. A cali brated model was validated through the hindcast of an overtopping event observed under moderate swell forcing, and was used to map the overtopping exposure during a hypothetical combination of an energetic swell with a water level having a return period of ~70 years. Compared to the default wave spectra shape and model settings, using an appropriate representation of the short-wave directional spectrum at the open boundary was necessary to reproduce the observed overtopping extent. Refining the cross-shore resolution of the model helped to better represent the observed inundation extents, as also did the reduction of the friction coefficient. Addi tional phase-resolving simulations in 1DH overestimated IG wave energy and produced higher and more frequent overtopping discharges. The differences with the calibrated 2DH surfbeat model increased with the proximity of the inlet and with short-wave height and angle of incidence. Overall, required calibration steps were provided. They aim at making 2DH XBeach surfbeat a credible tool for 1) predicting short and IG wave characteristics up to the shoreline, as well as for 2) providing first estimates of exposure to overtopping in areas with shallow and alongshore-irregular morphologies.

À medida que as ameaças ambientais se multiplicam à escala global exige-se uma mais apurada reflexividade sobre as práticas humanas, as formas de utilização dos territórios e seus recursos e a capacidade de previsão e resposta quanto a eventos ambientais extremos, socialmente disruptivos. Ora, é esta capacidade de previsão que a ciência experimenta em uma dimensão cada vez menos segura, entrando em crise os modelos causais e a pertinência do conhecimento empírico baseado em observações do passado, pois o futuro torna-se progressivamente mais incerto e ameaçador. Incerteza e ameaça que se antecipam em cada crise, sob a manifestação dos riscos ambientais [1]. Algumas destas manifestações tornam-se indetetáveis para os sentidos humanos, a não ser pela própria visibilidade das consequências. As comunidades humanas encontram-se, assim, cada vez mais dependentes da análise e do discurso da ciência para perceberem (mesmo que na impossibilidade de compreenderem com exatidão os mecanismos de exposição) os riscos a que estão expostas. A humanidade parece, pois, acossada numa estrutura medieval do medo, o medo do invisível, na emergência de um novo tipo de sociedade colonizada pelo medo e que dá lugar a todas as derivas políticas [2]....

A comprehensive performance assessment system for diagnosis and decision-support to improve water and energy efficiency and its demonstration in Portuguese collective irrigation systems.
In regions with a strong seasonal or interannual asymmetry in the distribution of precipitation and higher frequency of droughts, collective irrigation systems are vital infrastructures for agricultural activity. Although operating for decades, several systems have ageing infrastructures, with relevant water losses and pumping energy inefficiencies. Consequently, the systems are not adequately designed or operated to meet current and future water demand. Therefore, rehabilitation to improve water and energy efficiency while ensuring infrastructure, economic sustainability and service quality is crucial. In this sense, comprehensive approaches using performance assessment to support the planning process or benchmarking between water users associations play an essential role in improving efficiency in collective irrigation systems.

À medida que as ameaças ambientais se multiplicam à escala global exige-se uma mais apurada reflexividade sobre as práticas humanas, as formas de utilização dos territórios e seus recursos e a capacidade de previsão e resposta quanto a eventos ambientais extremos, socialmente disruptivos. Ora, é esta capacidade de previsão que a ciência experimenta em uma dimensão cada vez menos segura, entrando em crise os modelos causais e a pertinência do conhecimento empírico baseado em observações do passado, pois o futuro torna-se progressivamente mais incerto e ameaçador. Incerteza e ameaça que se antecipam em cada crise, sob a manifestação dos riscos ambientais [1]. Algumas destas manifestações tornam-se indetetáveis para os sentidos humanos, a não ser pela própria visibilidade das consequências. A comprehensive performance assessment system for diagnosis and decision-support to improve water and energy efficiency and its demonstration in Portuguese collective irrigation systems.
In regions with a strong seasonal or interannual asymmetry in the distribution of precipitation and higher frequency of droughts, collective irrigation systems are vital infrastructures for agricultural activity. Although operating for decades, several systems have ageing infrastructures, with relevant water losses and pumping energy inefficiencies. Consequently, the systems are not adequately designed or operated to meet current and future water demand. Therefore, rehabilitation to improve water and energy efficiency while ensuring infrastructure, economic sustainability and service quality is crucial. In this sense, comprehensive approaches using performance assessment to support the planning process or benchmarking between water users associations play an essential role in improving efficiency in collective irrigation systems.

Global and local geometrical imperfections of pultruded GFRP profiles based on a modal approach
ABSTRACT - The ultimate capacity of pultruded glass fibre reinforced polymer (pGFRP) profiles depends significantly on geometrical imperfections (GIs), given their sensitivity to buckling phenomena arising from both thin walls and low elastic moduli. However, GIs are not yet comprehensively addressed in design guidance. This paper proposes a new approach to characterize the initial GIs of pGFRP profiles based on a modal approach. Given the lack of comprehensive knowledge in this area, this study presents a highly accurate and robust methodology to measure GIs and dimensional deviations (DDs) in pGFRP profiles using a 3D contact coordinate measurement machine (CMM). The modal approach encompasses the measurement of dimensional parameters and a point cloud transformation that enables the assessment of GIs associated with pure buckling modes of pGFRP profiles. This procedure allows the quantification of three types of global GIs associated to (i) minor-axis (weak axis), (ii) major-axis (strong axis) bending, and (iii) twist. Additionally, the procedure also includes the assessment of local GIs, considering the wall (plate-like) imperfections. The separation of GIs into these four types (shape and amplitude) is of major relevance as its paves the way to the development of analytical design formulas for the strength prediction of pGFRP members. The approach described in this paper also serves two important purposes: (i) the statistical analysis of DDs and GIs of pGFRP members, and (ii) the identification of distinct shapes and amplitudes of GIs that form the basis for reliable design considerations of pGFRP members.

2DH modelling and mapping of surfbeat-driven flooding in the shadow of a jettied tidal inlet
Near estuaries and harbours, submerged shoals and defence structures impact the exposure to overtopping. These features may be accounted for in two-dimensional horizontal (2DH) numerical models, either based on phase resolving or phase-average solvers for wave propagation. In between, surfbeat solvers, such as in XBeach, combine an affordable computational cost with the ability to generate and propagate the longer infragravity (IG) waves. However, surfzone wave characteristics and the overtopping exposure modelled with XBeach are sensi tive to settings such as the shape of the forcing wave spectra and the numerical scheme for wave propagation. The present paper explores this sensitivity and assesses the performance of different inundation models built with the 2DH surfbeat solver of XBeach. These models were forced with downscaled water levels and directional wave spectra and the results fuelled a discussion bounded by data collected downdrift of the entrance to the harbour of Figueira da Foz (Portugal). The original second-order upwind scheme, which propagates short-waves with a lower numerical diffusion improved the model performance in terms of long-wave height, and an unconventional breaking criterion better represented the cross-shore distribution of short-wave height near the shore. A cali brated model was validated through the hindcast of an overtopping event observed under moderate swell forcing, and was used to map the overtopping exposure during a hypothetical combination of an energetic swell with a water level having a return period of ~70 years. Compared to the default wave spectra shape and model settings, using an appropriate representation of the short-wave directional spectrum at the open boundary was necessary to reproduce the observed overtopping extent. Refining the cross-shore resolution of the model helped to better represent the observed inundation extents, as also did the reduction of the friction coefficient. Global and local geometrical imperfections of pultruded GFRP profiles based on a modal approach
ABSTRACT - The ultimate capacity of pultruded glass fibre reinforced polymer (pGFRP) profiles depends significantly on geometrical imperfections (GIs), given their sensitivity to buckling phenomena arising from both thin walls and low elastic moduli. However, GIs are not yet comprehensively addressed in design guidance. This paper proposes a new approach to characterize the initial GIs of pGFRP profiles based on a modal approach. Given the lack of comprehensive knowledge in this area, this study presents a highly accurate and robust methodology to measure GIs and dimensional deviations (DDs) in pGFRP profiles using a 3D contact coordinate measurement machine (CMM). The modal approach encompasses the measurement of dimensional parameters and a point cloud transformation that enables the assessment of GIs associated with pure buckling modes of pGFRP profiles. This procedure allows the quantification of three types of global GIs associated to (i) minor-axis (weak axis), (ii) major-axis (strong axis) bending, and (iii) twist. Additionally, the procedure also includes the assessment of local GIs, considering the wall (plate-like) imperfections. The separation of GIs into these four types (shape and amplitude) is of major relevance as its paves the way to the development of analytical design formulas for the strength prediction of pGFRP members. The approach described in this paper also serves two important purposes: (i) the statistical analysis of DDs and GIs of pGFRP members, and (ii) the identification of distinct shapes and amplitudes of GIs that form the basis for reliable design considerations of pGFRP members.

2DH modelling and mapping of surfbeat-driven flooding in the shadow of a jettied tidal inlet
Near estuaries and harbours, submerged shoals and defence structures impact the exposure to overtopping. These features may be accounted for in two-dimensional horizontal (2DH) numerical models, either based on phase resolving or phase-average solvers for wave propagation. In between, surfbeat solvers, such as in XBeach, combine an affordable computational cost with the ability to generate and propagate the longer infragravity (IG) waves. However, surfzone wave characteristics and the overtopping exposure modelled with XBeach are sensi tive to settings such as the shape of the forcing wave spectra and the numerical scheme for wave propagation. The present paper explores this sensitivity and assesses the performance of different inundation models built with the 2DH surfbeat solver of XBeach. These models were forced with downscaled water levels and directional wave spectra and the results fuelled a discussion bounded by data collected downdrift of the entrance to the harbour of Figueira da Foz (Portugal). The original second-order upwind scheme, which propagates short-waves with a lower numerical diffusion improved the model performance in terms of long-wave height, and an unconventional breaking criterion better represented the cross-shore distribution of short-wave height near the shore. A cali brated model was validated through the hindcast of an overtopping event observed under moderate swell forcing, and was used to map the overtopping exposure during a hypothetical combination of an energetic swell with a water level having a return period of ~70 years. Compared to the default wave spectra shape and model settings, using an appropriate representation of the short-wave directional spectrum at the open boundary was necessary to reproduce the observed overtopping extent. Refining the cross-shore resolution of the model helped to better represent the observed inundation extents, as also did the reduction of the friction coefficient. Addi tional phase-resolving simulations in 1DH overestimated IG wave energy and produced higher and more frequent overtopping discharges. The differences with the calibrated 2DH surfbeat model increased with the proximity of the inlet and with short-wave height and angle of incidence. Overall, required calibration steps were provided. They aim at making 2DH XBeach surfbeat a credible tool for 1) predicting short and IG wave characteristics up to the shoreline, as well as for 2) providing first estimates of exposure to overtopping in areas with shallow and alongshore-irregular morphologies.

À medida que as ameaças ambientais se multiplicam à escala global exige-se uma mais apurada reflexividade sobre as práticas humanas, as formas de utilização dos territórios e seus recursos e a capacidade de previsão e resposta quanto a eventos ambientais extremos, socialmente disruptivos. Ora, é esta capacidade de previsão que a ciência experimenta em uma dimensão cada vez menos segura, entrando em crise os modelos causais e a pertinência do conhecimento empírico baseado em observações do passado, pois o futuro torna-se progressivamente mais incerto e ameaçador. Incerteza e ameaça que se antecipam em cada crise, sob a manifestação dos riscos ambientais [1]. Algumas destas manifestações tornam-se indetetáveis para os sentidos humanos, a não ser pela própria visibilidade das consequências. As comunidades humanas encontram-se, assim, cada vez mais dependentes da análise e do discurso da ciência para perceberem (mesmo que na impossibilidade de compreenderem com exatidão os mecanismos de exposição) os riscos a que estão expostas. A humanidade parece, pois, acossada numa estrutura medieval do medo, o medo do invisível, na emergência de um novo tipo de sociedade colonizada pelo medo e que dá lugar a todas as derivas políticas [2]....

A comprehensive performance assessment system for diagnosis and decision-support to improve water and energy efficiency and its demonstration in Portuguese collective irrigation systems.
In regions with a strong seasonal or interannual asymmetry in the distribution of precipitation and higher frequency of droughts, collective irrigation systems are vital infrastructures for agricultural activity. Although operating for decades, several systems have ageing infrastructures, with relevant water losses and pumping energy inefficiencies. Consequently, the systems are not adequately designed or operated to meet current and future water demand. Therefore, rehabilitation to improve water and energy efficiency while ensuring infrastructure, economic sustainability and service quality is crucial. In this sense, comprehensive approaches using performance assessment to support the planning process or benchmarking between water users associations play an essential role in improving efficiency in collective irrigation systems.

How does the adsorption of microcystins and anatoxin-a on nanofiltration membranes depend on their co-existence and on the water background matrix
This work intends to study the adsorption of the cyanotoxins microcystin-LR (MC-LR) and anatoxin-a (ATX-a) on a nanofiltration membrane (150 Da molar mass cut-off and an isoelectric point of 56 in the presence of calcium ions), in particular, to understand the toxins adsorption behaviour with the solution chemistry, namely with the background natural organic matter (NOM), the water pH and the co-existence of MC-LR and ATX-a. The results demonstrate that MC-LR adsorption increases with the water recovery due to MC-LR feed concentration increase. MC-LR adsorption is governed by hydrophobic interactions established between the membrane and the negatively charged MC-LR molecules, and between the MC-LR molecules. The increase of hydrophilic, positively charged low molar mass NOM and of hydrophobic, negatively charged high molar mass NOM does not impact MC-LR adsorption at pH 8. ATX-a adsorption onto the membrane is governed by electrostatic attractions with the membrane and NOM molecules. Background NOM minimises the ATX-a adsorption at pH 7 and enhances it at pH 4, i.e. NOM seems to act as a carrier for ATX-a adsorption onto the membrane. When ATX-a and MC-LR co-exist, adsorption is higher for ATX-a than for MC-LR at pH 4 and 7, and is higher at pH 4 for both cyanotoxins, consistent with the NOM interference.

Hydration products of limemetakaolin pastes at ambient temperature with ageing
Mortars constituted of lime mixtures with pozzolanic additions have been extensively used in the past for the construction of historic and traditional buildings. This paper presents the results of blended pastes of lime and metakaolin (MK), namely compounds formed and their stability over time. This research is part of an extensive study aiming at the formulation of lime based mortars for restoration purposes. It has been shown for several years that MK has been applied in inorganic binders due to its capacity to react vigorously with calcium hydroxide (CH). In the presence of water originating a series of major hydrated phases, namely tetra calcium aluminate hydrate (C4AH13), calcium silicates hydrates (CSH) and calcium aluminium silicate hydrates (stratlingite C2ASH8). Several blended pastes of lime and MK, with different substitution rates of lime by MK (wt%) were prepared and cured at a temperature of 20 ?C and relative humidity RH > 95%. The phase composition of the formed hydrated phases was determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and simultaneous thermal analysis (TGDTA). The obtained results showed that lime/MK pastes compositions displayed different reaction kinetics during curing time, being the pozzolanic products content directly proportional to the substitution rate of lime by MK. Also, a relationship between the increase stratlingite content and the MK substitution rate of lime by MK was found.

Hydrodynamics around an Artificial Surfing Reef at Leirosa, Portugal
As a new alternative countermeasure to protect the coastal zone and to increase the surfing possibilities in the Leirosa area of Portugal, multifunctional artificial reefs were investigated numerically in this paper. The primary surfing parameters used in the design (i.e., breaker type, peel angle, wave height at breaking, and currents around the artificial reef) were analyzed. The reef functionality was also analyzed for coastal protection. Two reef geometries with different reef angles of 45 and 66° were tested, considering two design wave conditions (storm and common) and two tide levels (medium and low). Simulations show that both reef geometries are adequate for surfing, although the reef angle of 66° is more suitable for standard surfers, and the 45° angle is more adequate for advanced/professional surfers. A morphodynamic study should be carried out to analyze the efficiency of the artificial surf reef for coastal protection. Importance of wave age and resonance in storm surges: The case Xynthia, Bay of Biscay
This study aims to hindcast and analyze the storm surge associated with Xynthia, a mid-latitude depression that severely hit the French central part of the Bay of Biscay on the 2728th of February 2010. The main losses in human lives and damages were caused by the associated storm surge, which locally exceeded 1.5 m and peaked at the same time as a high spring tide, causing the flooding of low-lying coasts. A new storm surge modeling system was developed, based on the unstructured-grid circulation model SELFE and the spectral wave model WaveWatchIII. The modeling system was implemented over the North-East Atlantic Ocean and resulted in tidal and wave predictions with errors of the order of 3% and 15%, respectively. The storm surge associated with Xynthia was also well predicted along the Bay of Biscay, with only a slight underestimation of the surge peak by 38%. Numerical experiments were then performed to analyze the physical processes controlling the development of the storm surge and revealed firstly that the wind caused most of the water level anomaly through an Ekman setup process. The comparison between a wave-dependant and a quadratic parameterization to compute wind stress showed that the storm surge was strongly amplified by the presence of steep and young wind-waves, related to their rapid development in the restricted fetch of the Bay of Biscay. In the central part of the Bay of Biscay, both observed and predicted water level anomalies at landfall displayed 6 h oscillations, with amplitudes of up to 0.2 m (1020% of the surge peak). An analytical shelf resonance model and numerical experiments demonstrated that the period of the observed oscillations corresponds to the resonant mode of the continental shelf in the central part of the Bay of Biscay. It is concluded that these oscillations originate from the interactions between the water level perturbation and the continental shelf and this phenomenon is expected to be relevant at other places along the worlds coastlines.

Inspeção e monitorização de estruturas de madeira
O paradigma da construção de estruturas de madeira em Portugal mudou nos últimos 15 anos, com o aparecimento de grandes estruturas modernas, sobretudo de madeira lamelada colada, com formas arrojadas e grande impacto visual. Mas essa novidade e visibilidade acarretam igualmente a responsabilidade acrescida de todos os intervenientes, no sentido de garantir uma boa imagem destas realizações. O bom funcionamento, a segurança e a durabilidade das estruturas de madeira dependem de muitos fatores, designadamente de opções corretas ao nível do projeto e das soluções construtivas, do fabrico, da montagem e da manutenção. A garantia da qualidade passa pela revisão de projeto, a certificação dos produtos, a fiscalização e o controlo de qualidade do processo de construção. É também fundamental investir na formação de todos os intervenientes sobre aspetos específicos e problemas típicos das estruturas de madeira. São específicos e particularmente importantes: o dimensionamento e a pormenorização das ligações; os efeitos da humidade e variações dimensionais da madeira e os esforços de tração perpendicular às fibras, aspetos que se conjugam muitas vezes no desenvolvimen¬to de anomalias. Neste contexto, a inspeção e a monitorização das estruturas de madeira assumem um papel fundamental na deteção (e correção) atempada de situações problemáticas ou anomalias, devendo ser levadas a cabo por técnicos com conhecimento e experiência neste domínio.

Integração de aspetos qualitativos na avaliação do ambiente sonoro em zonas urbanas
Para a avaliação da perceção de medidas de minimização de ruído de tráfego rodoviário, em zonas urbanas, foram desenvolvidos no presente trabalho, dois inquéritos, um para avaliação da estrutura cognitiva dos indivíduos ao ruído de tráfego e o outro relativo à perceção das medidas de minimização de ruído. A estrutura e formulação das questões e o seu conteúdo foram baseados na pesquisa bibliografia efetuada, e em entrevistas semiestruturadas previamente realizadas. Para a sua efetivação, foi necessária uma abordagem multidisciplinar, na medida em que se utilizou conhecimentos de psicologia ambiental, estatística, acústica e de psicoacústica.

Joint use of data and modeling in coastal wave transformation
In the framework of a research project entitled BRISABReaking waves and Induced SAnd transport, a methodology was devised to characterize the waves joining together in-situ measurements and numerical wave propagation models. With this goal in mind, a number of in-situ measurements were made, for selected positions in front of Praia de Faro (South Portugal), during four days (25th to 28th March, 2009) by using different types of equipments (e.g., resistive wave gauges, pressure sensors, currentmeters and a new prototype pore pressure sensor using optical fibre). Wave records were obtained simultaneously offshore (at a water depth of 11.7 m below mean sea level, MSL) and at the surf and swash zones. The data processing and analysis were made by applying classical time domain techniques. Numerical simulations of the wave propagation between offshore and inshore for the measurement period were performed with two numerical models, a 1D model based on linear theory and a nonlinear Boussinesq-type model, COULWAVE, both forced by the measured offshore wave conditions of 27th March 2009. Comparisons between numerical results and field data for the pressure sensors placed in the surf and swash zones were made and discussed. This approach enables to evaluate the performance of those models to simulate those specific conditions, but also to validate the models by gaining confidence on their use in other conditions.

Key issues for sustainable urban stormwater management
Since ancient times, it is understood that stormwater from constructed areas should be managed somehow. Waste and pollution transported by stormwater poses quantity and quality problems, affecting public health and the quality of the environment. Sanitation infrastructures in urbanized regions have different development levels and the perception of stormwater changed considerably during the centuries and especially in recent years. Still, there is an evident worldwide heterogeneity when analyzing the lack of studies on urban stormwater conducted in some Asian or African countries. Strategies for sustainable stormwater management are needed at different decision levels (political, regional or local scale, for instance) but all of them need information and a clear understanding of the possibilities that are at stake as well as the main consequences of each decision. A sound approach to stormwater management should be flexible, based on local characteristics, and should take into consideration temporal, spatial and administrative factors and law, among other issues. Economic or technical constraints define different decision scenarios. Best Management Practices should be seen as an opportunity for development and improvement of social, educational and environmental conditions in urbanized and surrounding areas. Therefore they require an ample perspective and the participation of different stakeholders. High-quality decision needs time and a fair overview of the problem: the purpose of this document is to contribute to sustainable stormwater management, informing on the most relevant factors that should be assessed and their interaction. A flowchart has been produced and is presented, indicating the most relevant steps, processes and information that should be taken into account in urban development.

Global and local geometrical imperfections of pultruded GFRP profiles based on a modal approach
ABSTRACT - The ultimate capacity of pultruded glass fibre reinforced polymer (pGFRP) profiles depends significantly on geometrical imperfections (GIs), given their sensitivity to buckling phenomena arising from both thin walls and low elastic moduli. However, GIs are not yet comprehensively addressed in design guidance. This paper proposes a new approach to characterize the initial GIs of pGFRP profiles based on a modal approach. Given the lack of comprehensive knowledge in this area, this study presents a highly accurate and robust methodology to measure GIs and dimensional deviations (DDs) in pGFRP profiles using a 3D contact coordinate measurement machine (CMM). The modal approach encompasses the measurement of dimensional parameters and a point cloud transformation that enables the assessment of GIs associated with pure buckling modes of pGFRP profiles. This procedure allows the quantification of three types of global GIs associated to (i) minor-axis (weak axis), (ii) major-axis (strong axis) bending, and (iii) twist. Additionally, the procedure also includes the assessment of local GIs, considering the wall (plate-like) imperfections. The separation of GIs into these four types (shape and amplitude) is of major relevance as its paves the way to the development of analytical design formulas for the strength prediction of pGFRP members. The approach described in this paper also serves two important purposes: (i) the statistical analysis of DDs and GIs of pGFRP members, and (ii) the identification of distinct shapes and amplitudes of GIs that form the basis for reliable design considerations of pGFRP members.

2DH modelling and mapping of surfbeat-driven flooding in the shadow of a jettied tidal inlet
Near estuaries and harbours, submerged shoals and defence structures impact the exposure to overtopping. These features may be accounted for in two-dimensional horizontal (2DH) numerical models, either based on phase resolving or phase-average solvers for wave propagation. In between, surfbeat solvers, such as in XBeach, combine an affordable computational cost with the ability to generate and propagate the longer infragravity (IG) waves. However, surfzone wave characteristics and the overtopping exposure modelled with XBeach are sensi tive to settings such as the shape of the forcing wave spectra and the numerical scheme for wave propagation. The present paper explores this sensitivity and assesses the performance of different inundation models built with the 2DH surfbeat solver of XBeach. These models were forced with downscaled water levels and directional wave spectra and the results fuelled a discussion bounded by data collected downdrift of the entrance to the harbour of Figueira da Foz (Portugal). The original second-order upwind scheme, which propagates short-waves with a lower numerical diffusion improved the model performance in terms of long-wave height, and an unconventional breaking criterion better represented the cross-shore distribution of short-wave height near the shore. A cali brated model was validated through the hindcast of an overtopping event observed under moderate swell forcing, and was used to map the overtopping exposure during a hypothetical combination of an energetic swell with a water level having a return period of ~70 years. Compared to the default wave spectra shape and model settings, using an appropriate representation of the short-wave directional spectrum at the open boundary was necessary to reproduce the observed overtopping extent. Refining the cross-shore resolution of the model helped to better represent the observed inundation extents, as also did the reduction of the friction coefficient. Addi tional phase-resolving simulations in 1DH overestimated IG wave energy and produced higher and more frequent overtopping discharges. The differences with the calibrated 2DH surfbeat model increased with the proximity of the inlet and with short-wave height and angle of incidence. Overall, required calibration steps were provided. They aim at making 2DH XBeach surfbeat a credible tool for 1) predicting short and IG wave characteristics up to the shoreline, as well as for 2) providing first estimates of exposure to overtopping in areas with shallow and alongshore-irregular morphologies.

À medida que as ameaças ambientais se multiplicam à escala global exige-se uma mais apurada reflexividade sobre as práticas humanas, as formas de utilização dos territórios e seus recursos e a capacidade de previsão e resposta quanto a eventos ambientais extremos, socialmente disruptivos. Ora, é esta capacidade de previsão que a ciência experimenta em uma dimensão cada vez menos segura, entrando em crise os modelos causais e a pertinência do conhecimento empírico baseado em observações do passado, pois o futuro torna-se progressivamente mais incerto e ameaçador. Incerteza e ameaça que se antecipam em cada crise, sob a manifestação dos riscos ambientais [1]. Algumas destas manifestações tornam-se indetetáveis para os sentidos humanos, a não ser pela própria visibilidade das consequências. As comunidades humanas encontram-se, assim, cada vez mais dependentes da análise e do discurso da ciência para perceberem (mesmo que na impossibilidade de compreenderem com exatidão os mecanismos de exposição) os riscos a que estão expostas. A humanidade parece, pois, acossada numa estrutura medieval do medo, o medo do invisível, na emergência de um novo tipo de sociedade colonizada pelo medo e que dá lugar a todas as derivas políticas [2]....

A comprehensive performance assessment system for diagnosis and decision-support to improve water and energy efficiency and its demonstration in Portuguese collective irrigation systems.
In regions with a strong seasonal or interannual asymmetry in the distribution of precipitation and higher frequency of droughts, collective irrigation systems are vital infrastructures for agricultural activity. Although operating for decades, several systems have ageing infrastructures, with relevant water losses and pumping energy inefficiencies. Consequently, the systems are not adequately designed or operated to meet current and future water demand. Therefore, rehabilitation to improve water and energy efficiency while ensuring infrastructure, economic sustainability and service quality is crucial. In this sense, comprehensive approaches using performance assessment to support the planning process or benchmarking between water users associations play an essential role in improving efficiency in collective irrigation systems.

They aim at making 2DH XBeach surfbeat a credible tool for 1) predicting short and IG wave characteristics up to the shoreline, as well as for 2) providing first estimates of exposure to overtopping in areas with shallow and alongshore-irregular morphologies.

A ciência é do povo? Citizen science, reflexões sobre o conceito e os processos científicos da produção da verdade num mundo cada vez mais inseguro
À medida que as ameaças ambientais se multiplicam à escala global exige-se uma mais apurada reflexividade sobre as práticas humanas, as formas de utilização dos territórios e seus recursos e a capacidade de previsão e resposta quanto a eventos ambientais extremos, socialmente disruptivos. Ora, é esta capacidade de previsão que a ciência experimenta em uma dimensão cada vez menos segura, entrando em crise os modelos causais e a pertinência do conhecimento empírico baseado em observações do passado, pois o futuro torna-se progressivamente mais incerto e ameaçador. Incerteza e ameaça que se antecipam em cada crise, sob a manifestação dos riscos ambientais [1]. Algumas destas manifestações tornam-se indetetáveis para os sentidos humanos, a não ser pela própria visibilidade das consequências. As comunidades humanas encontram-se, assim, cada vez mais dependentes da análise e do discurso da ciência para perceberem (mesmo que na impossibilidade de compreenderem com exatidão os mecanismos de exposição) os riscos a que estão expostas. A humanidade parece, pois, acossada numa estrutura medieval do medo, o medo do invisível, na emergência de um novo tipo de sociedade colonizada pelo medo e que dá lugar a todas as derivas políticas [2]....

A comprehensive performance assessment system for diagnosis and decision-support to improve water and energy efficiency and its demonstration in Portuguese collective irrigation systems.
In regions with a strong seasonal or interannual asymmetry in the distribution of precipitation and higher frequency of droughts, collective irrigation systems are vital infrastructures for agricultural activity. Although operating for decades, several systems have ageing infrastructures, with relevant water losses and pumping energy inefficiencies. Consequently, the systems are not adequately designed or operated to meet current and future water demand. Therefore, rehabilitation to improve water and energy efficiency while ensuring infrastructure, economic sustainability and service quality is crucial. In this sense, comprehensive approaches using performance assessment to support the planning process or benchmarking between water users associations play an essential role in improving efficiency in collective irrigation systems.
