The R&D activities under way at the Transportation Department basically refer to two scientific areas of LNEC: "Transports" and "Roads, Railways and Airfields”, being particularly focused on road and airport pavements, railways and corresponding foundations, transportation planning, transport economics, sustainable mobility and operation of road traffic systems, especially as regards their safety.
These areas are covered through applied research studies, the resulting knowledge being held available to society by means of contract studies, dissemination and training activities and in the support to governmental bodies in what concerns public works in the transportation domain at the various stages of their life cycle.
The Transportation Department is organized into two Units, the Transport Infrastructures Unit and the Planning, Traffic and Safety Unit.
