Program Overview:

Portugal National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC) has the mission to undertake, coordinate, and promote scientific research and technological development, aiming for continuous improvement, and the good practice of Civil Engineering. It is also LNEC’s responsibility to pursue the public interest, by providing services of Science and Technology to public and private, national and foreign entities, contributing to innovation, dissemination of knowledge, and technology transfer.
It is also LNEC’s mission to assist the Government in the pursuit of public policies and to provide technical support to the entities which constitute the Authority in the various sectors of Public Administration, in particular with regard to: 1) Quality and safety of work, people, and assets; 2) Protection and requalification of the natural and built heritage; and 3) Modernisation and technological innovation, particularly in the building sector.
Since its early days, LNEC has been establishing networks and partnerships with national and international entities. This has given it the ability to promote and foster the globalization of Science and Knowledge. Such excellence has positioned LNEC as an important partner in its areas of expertise.

12) OUTPUT PT1 from LNEC FP7 INNO-DEMO MARSOL project (LNEC/DHA/NRE): video on PT1 Demo Site Rio Seco and Campina de Faro aquifer system (Algarve) activities (whose main goal is to improve the groundwater quality heavily contaminated with nitrates (vulnerable zone), mainly due to agriculture bad practices) related to a river bed infiltration clogging test, developed July 2014

7:23 min

13) OUTPUT PT2 from LNEC FP7 INNO-DEMO MARSOL project (LNEC/DHA/NRE): video on Demo Site Querença-Silves limestone karstic aquifer system (Algarve) activities

There are two main sub-areas and two goals: (1) develop a soil-aquifer-treatment (SAT) system to improve the water quality of treated effluents from a waste water treatment plant (WWTP) (PT2_4), which discharges into Ribeiro Meirinho river (PT2_5) that recharges the karstic aquifer, and (2) increase groundwater storage at Cerro do Bardo karstic area using wet years surface water surplus to increase the water availability in dry years and facilitate downstream water supply. This video is related to the tracer and 90 hours infiltration test done in MARSOL Demo Site PT2 Cerro do Bardo MAR test, April 2016.

14) OUTPUT PT3 from LNEC FP7 INNO-DEMO MARSOL project (LNEC/DHA/NRE): video on Melides aquifer, river and lagoon (Alentejo) research activities, including those at LNEC MARSOL Sandbox Model(May2016).PT3 main research goal is to get expertise on the use of SAT-MAR to remove rice field pollutants prior to their discharge in Melides lagoon. This video is related to a physical sand box model, i.e. LNEC artificial aquifer developed in LNEC, Lisbon Portugal, filled in three separated compartments with three different soil layering: one with just Melides soil, and two with different experimental layers of soils with different hydraulic conductivity values, developed May 2016.
