Head of Unit
The Metrological Quality Unit Scientific Instrumentation Centre, created in 1993, aimed at developing R&DI (research, development, and innovation) in the fields of Metrology and Quality.
In this context, this Unit ensures the traceability and quality of measurements in all areas of Civil Engineering activity in which LNEC operates, promoting the diffusion of knowledge and the development and validation of methods and technology for the construction sector, as well as the development of competences for the quality management system that supports the accreditation of LNEC-EM’s (Testing and Metrology) laboratory units.
Since its creation, the Unit has developed networking activities with both national and international R&DI entities, especially the main organizations that work in the areas of Metrology and Quality.
The scope of the Unit’s activities in the areas of Metrology and Quality comprises:
· Study, definition, design and validation of methods to promote the quality of measurement and its traceability, within the scope of various physical quantities of interest to Civil Engineering (dimensional, mass, pressure, force, temperature, humidity, flow, flow speed, electrical quantities, geometric quantities, roughness and quantities in dynamic regime, among others).
· Study, development, and validation of methods aimed at quantifying measurement uncertainty in calibrations and testing, its analysis and application, namely,in conformity assessment processes.
· Study of new reference and transfer methods and standards, associated with procedures for the traceability of equipment and Civil Engineering standards.
· R&DI aimed at applying mathematical and computational methods associated with the measurement of quantities in Civil Engineering.
· Development of numerical calculation libraries and computational tools applied in Metrology and their validation.
