The Transportation Department is LNEC’s Unit dedicated to the study of subjects related to mobility and transportation. Its main areas of activity are roads, airports and railways infrastructures, traffic, road safety, planning and transport economy.
The Transportation Department comprises two main organic units: the Transport Infrastructure Unit and the Planning, Traffic and Safety Unit, in which two laboratories are included: the Pavements and Materials for Transport Infrastructures Laboratory, accredited by IPAC; and the Road Traffic Equipment and Analysis Laboratory.
The Department resources are complemented and broadened with those from other LNEC’s departments and through external partnerships at national and international level, aiming at the development of multidisciplinary projects.
At European level, the Transportation Department is responsible for LNEC’s representation in three associations that cover a complete range of research topics in the area of transportation: FEHRL, FERSI and ECTRI.
The Transportation Department develops Research and Innovation (R&I) activities and performs Science and Technology (S&T) studies and advices in the following fields:
· Transport infrastructures, comprising structural design and modelling, materials and construction technologies, structural and functional performance assessment, maintenance and rehabilitation and asset management;
· Traffic and road safety, comprising studies on driving behaviour and vulnerable road users and C-ITS application on safety management, em motorways, rural roads and urban streets;
· Transport planning and sustainable mobility, comprising studies related to decarbonization and focusing on public transport and soft transport modes.
The Department also performs other scientific and technical activities, advising public and private entities in domains related to regulation and standardisation, supporting the construction industry on issues related to the quality of transport infrastructures, organizing and participating in advanced training courses and scientific events, as well as producing scientific and technical publications.
