Study of hydrogeological impacts of the Alcantara area
2025-03-24

In the last 14 years, the Geotechnics Department of LNEC has carried out several studies, mainly in the Alcântara Valley area, as required by the Alcântara Urban Plan, to evaluate the hydrogeological impact caused by the construction of underground structures such as basements and tunnels. These studies aim to contribute to the sustainable urban development of this riverfront area by reducing the risk of flooding.

The hydrogeological impact studies comprise three-dimensional groundwater flow models supported by reconnaissance and monitoring campaigns that characterize the local geological and hydrogeological conditions. Therefore, aspects related to the quality of the geological and hydrogeological information, in terms of the definition of the works to be carried out and the procedures to be followed, play an essential role in the reliability of the studies results.

The development of these studies is in line with the urban renewal that is taking place in this area of Lisbon. The diversity of the proposed solutions, expressed in a heterogeneous spatial distribution of underground structures already built, under construction and to be built, has led to an increase in the complexity of the studies, especially in the definition of mitigation measures, where necessary.
