        LNEC Lisbon Conference - Dams and the Energy Transition

        LNEC Lisbon Conference - Dams and the Energy Transition

        The LNEC Lisbon Conference is an annual event dedicated to strategic discussions on emerging and relevant topics for the advancement of civil engineering and related fields.

        The fourth edition of the LNEC Lisbon Conference, Dams and the Energy Transition, aims to address the following topics:

        - Promoting sustainability and decarbonisation of society and the economy, contributing to combating climate change through clean and resilient energy systems;

        - Strengthening energy independence and regional development, ensuring supply stability and the efficient management of strategic resources for communities;

        - Ensuring the safety and protection of territories and communities by modernising critical infrastructure and increasing resilience to extreme climate events;

        - Enhancing transparency and efficiency in the management of vital resources, by leveraging digital innovation and qualified technical oversight to ensure social well-being and technological progress.

        In this context, the conference aims, in collaboration with the technical community and civil society:

        - To identify stakeholder needs to inform research agendas related to a sustainable built environment, its challenges, and innovation;

        - To foster stakeholder engagement through the exchange of knowledge and expertise.

        The conference programme targets the following audience:

        - Policymakers and government and local regulators;

        - Producers and managers of energy infrastructure and services;

        - The specialised technical community;

        - The technology and digital innovation sector;

        - Academia, researchers, and experts;

        - Civil society organisations.

        The LNEC Lisbon Conference 2026 is organised around four main themes:

        - Theme 1 – Energy transition and renewable energies
        The technical, economic, and social challenges of the energy transition within the context of decarbonisation and electrification.

        - Theme 2 – Storage and system flexibility
        The strategic role of hydropower and pumped storage systems in ensuring stability and flexibility of electricity grids.

        - Theme 3 – Modernisation and repowering
        The need to modernise and repower dams and associated infrastructure to increase resilience to ageing and extreme climate events.

        - Theme 4 – Digitalisation and technological innovation
        The digital transformation of infrastructure, integrating advanced digital technologies such as BIM, Digital Twins, and Artificial Intelligence to support efficient water and safety management.

        LNEC Lisbon Conference series

        LNEC conducts scientific research and technological development across all areas of civil engineering, including infrastructure, housing, and the environment. As part of its mission, LNEC anticipates society’s needs in terms of knowledge, technical solutions, and best practices within its fields of activity.

        To this end, LNEC launched the LNEC Lisbon Conference in 2023, focusing each year on a theme related to civil engineering and its role in society.

        The LNEC Lisbon Conference brings together leading institutions and renowned experts, fostering interaction among diverse stakeholders and strategic partners, and promoting the collaborative exchange of knowledge, ideas, and innovative solutions. The conference aims to identify stakeholder needs, shape future research agendas, and provide guidance to research policies related to the conference themes.
