Luís Cordeiro Matias
Head of Unit
The Acoustics, Lighting, Building Components and Facilities Unit carries out studies in the following areas:
· Acoustics of buildings and built spaces, including the characterization of sound sources, propagation processes, and the behaviour of materials and construction elements.
· Lighting of buildings and built spaces and energy component of solar radiation, including characterization of lighting conditions, artificial lighting sources, and visual conditions of spaces.
· Environmental acoustical assessment.
· Building components and equipment and their installation process, including definition and verification of compliance with quality requirements.
· Building installations, namely for water supply, wastewater drainage, ventilation, and air conditioning.
· Propagation of vibrations in buildings and in the environment, and radiation of structural noise.
· Energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
The Acoustics, Lighting, Building Components and Facilities Unit develops the following activities:
• Programmed Research.
• Studies and consultancy (contract research).
• Specialized technical consultancy activities for the construction industry.
• Technical assessment of products.
• Tests for characterization and performance evaluation of materials and products.
• Support for certification and granting of quality marks.
• Participation in technical committees.
• Advanced training.
Also, and within the scope of activities carried out by this Unit, the Sampling Criteria for tests of acoustics of buildings and of Ambient Vibrations for the evaluation of damages and structural noise were published.
The Unit integrates the following Operative Units, to carry out trials, tests, and qualification of solutions and systems:
· Acoustics and Vibration Laboratory
· Photometry and Colorimetry Laboratory
Within the scope of LNEC's research and innovation strategy, the Unit has been framing and supporting several master and doctoral theses, in collaboration with Portuguese universities.
