        Luís Matias

        Head of Unit

The Environmental Comfort, Components and Building Services Unit carries out studies in the following areas:

        •  Thermal performance of buildings and built spaces, including the characterization of the behavior of thermal insulation products and systems
        •  Buildings energy efficiency , encompassing the performance evaluation of the building envelope and systems
        •  Lighting of buildings and built spaces and energy component of solar radiation, including characterization of lighting conditions, artificial lighting sources, and visual conditions of spaces
        •  Acoustics of buildings and built spaces, including the characterization of sound sources, propagation processes, the behaviour of materials and construction elements and Environmental acoustics
        •  Propagation of vibrations in buildings and in the environment, including structural noise analysis and effects on occupants
        •  Environmental comfort in buildings and urban spaces, considering an integrated perspective of thermal, acoustic, lighting, and indoor air quality parameters
        •  Building components and equipment and their installation process, including definition and verification of compliance with quality requirements
        •  Building installations, namely for water supply, wastewater drainage, ventilation, and air conditioning

        Activity

The Environmental Comfort, Components and Building Services Unit develops the following activities:

        •  Programmed Research
        •  Studies and consultancy
        •  Specialized technical consultancy activities for the construction industry
        •  Technical assessment of products
        •  Tests for characterization and performance evaluation of materials and products
        •  Support for certification and granting of quality marks
        •  Participation in technical committees
        •  Advanced training

Also, and within the scope of activities carried out by this Unit, the Sampling Criteria for tests of acoustics of buildings and of Ambient Vibrations for the evaluation of damages and structural noise were published.

The Unit integrates the following Operative Units, to carry out trials, tests, and qualification of solutions and systems:

Within the scope of LNEC's research and innovation strategy, the Unit has been framing and supporting several master theses and doctoral dissertation, in collaboration with Portuguese universities.
