        Carlos Santos

        Head of Unit

The Electrotechnical and Mechanical Systems Unit develops scientific and technological activities in the field of Scientific Instrumentation, namely:

        • Design and development of measuring instruments and test equipment for field or laboratory tests, specially designed for application in the broad field of Civil Engineering.
        • Transduction of physical quantities, conditioning, data acquisition and digital signal processing, automation and control systems, power electronics and electromechanical drives
        • Definition and establishment of test methodologies and participation in multidisciplinary teams aiming to conduct field and laboratory studies and tests.
        • Technological consultancy, particularly in the selection and acquisition of diverse instrumentation, to support LNEC’s activities.
        • Construction of measuring instruments’ prototypes, testing equipment, test specimens, and physical models.

        Activity

        Current lines of research:

        • Assessment of railway support conditions through modal analysis based on on-board instrumentation.
        • Development of instrumentation and control systems for carrying out tests on small-scale physical models.
        • Development of modular systems to minimize human intervention in current laboratory tests.
        • Development of methodologies, in a distributed environment, for validation, reduction, and management of data flows from the automatic observation of structures.
        • Optical measurement systems for monitoring infrastructures, carrying out small-scale model tests, and monitoring test equipment.
        • Development of monitoring and remote actuation systems for measuring and communication equipment.
        • Fire modelling in naturally ventilated tunnels using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software.
