João Marcelino
Head of Unit
The Geotechnics of Hydraulic Works Unit performs geotechnical-engineering studies for embankment infrastructures and provides specialised technical consultancy to multiple entities, particularly regarding design, construction and safety monitoring aspects.
Internationally, one may highlight the studies conducted in the Portuguese-speaking African countries and Brazil, in addition to the training and capacity building for their laboratories. In Portugal, NGOH contribution occurs within the scope of RSB (Dam Safety Regulation) as an advisor to APA (Portuguese Environment Agency) and as consultant for dam owners.
For the connection to society and dissemination of knowledge, the Unit researchers supervise MSc and PhD students. They cooperate within training programs of laboratory and field tests on soils, rockfill, and their mixtures, as well of construction control of embankments.
Among the major projects where the Geotechnics of Hydraulic Works Unit had an active role, the Paradela, Odelouca, Pico da Urze, Lapão and Pisão dams stand out, along with the Ferrovia 2020 (Portuguese Railway Modernisation program), the High-Speed Railway Line, the Vasco da Gama Bridge, and the New Lisbon International Airport.
The Geotechnics of Hydraulic Works Unit carries out R&D&I activities, integrated into the LNEC Research and Innovation Strategy 2021-2027, as well as consultancy studies on the hydro-mechanical performance of embankment structures, including the following ones.
