The researchers and technicians of the Urban and Transportation Geotechnics Unit (NGUT) can deal, at the level of Scientific Research & Innovation (I&D&I) and technical advisory, in a wide range of topics in the field of Geotechnics, such as:
- Foundation of structures
- Soil retaining structures
- Stability of natural slopes and excavation
- Underground works
- Soil treatment, improvement and reinforcement
- Surface geothermal engineering
- Modelling of geotechnical structures and geomaterials
Over the years, the Unit has had several relevant contributions to the Portuguese Engineering panorama, such as the stability of the Portas do Sol slopes, the stability of the access roads slopes of the 25 de Abril Bridge and the Metro Extension Plan of Lisbon.
Activity
Within the scope of LNEC's Research and Innovation Strategy (E2I) and technical advisory, the Urban and Transportion Geotechnics Unit performs activities of:
- Scientific research & innovation (I&D&I) through national and international projects
- Consultancy services of geotechnical works during their design and construction
- Observation and safety assessment of geotechnical structures
- Monitoring and coordination of field tests on geotechnical structures
- Standardisation in Geotechnics

- Development of constitutive models
- Sustainability assessment of shallow geothermal systems for Lisbon (GEOSUSTAINED project)
- Anchored structures
Technical-scientific advisory
- Construction of new railway lines and intervention in existing ones
- Expansion of the Lisbon and Oporto metro network
- Lisbon Drainage Master Plan
Observation and testing of geotechnical structures
- Monitoring and coordination of field tests on anchors and soil nails
- Observation of structures
Standardisation
- Standardisation in Geotechnics within the scope of CT 156 of IPQ
- Keep track of the European and International normative activity of CEN TC 288, CEN TC 341 and ISO TC 182.
