AREAS OF RESEARCH / INTEREST
Coastal science and engineering: Littoral physical processes; Coastal dynamics; Beach-dune system morphodynamics during storms and at medium and long term; Coastline evolution; Numerical modelling of wave-sediment-structure interactions; Beach rehabilitation; Risks of coastal erosion and overtopping; Strategic measures for adaptation to climate changes in coastal zones; Coastal protection solutions.
Mathematics: Numerical method solutions for partial differential equations; Iterative Krylov subspace methods; Multigrid technique.
DEVELOPED ACTIVITY
Advanced consultancy projects: national (continent and Madeira archipelago) and international (Brasil, People´s Republic of China, United Kingdom, São Tomé e Príncipe, Guiné Bissau, Angola, Senegal), for governmental and private entities, mostly in the areas of coastal dynamics and coastal risks.
Research projects financed by national institutions (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia and Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian) and international institutions (European Commission).
Recent projects include: MOSAIC.pt (Multi-source flood risk analysis for safe coastal communities and sustainable development), PROTOCOL (Protection of Urban Coastal Fronts Against Global Warming), HYDRALAB+ (Adapting for Climate Change), MORFEED (Morphological response of estuarine margins to the impact of climate change), RENCOASTAL (Regulations and environmental conflicts due to coastal erosion) and HYDRALAB IV (More than water; dealing with the complex interaction of water with environmental elements, sediment, structures and ice).
Some results of the projects developed were:
- the authorship or co-authorship of 245 publications, including: 45 papers in indexed journals, 5 book chapters, 100 conference papers and 95 reports;
- scientific supervision of 26 researchers: trainees, research project fellows, M.Sc. students, Ph.D. students and Pos-docs, from national and international academic institutions.
