AREAS OF RESEARCH/INTEREST
- Prevention and mitigation of internal expansive chemical reactions (alkali-aggregate reaction and internal sulphate reaction) in mortars and concrete.
- Conservation and characterization of materials with historical and architectural interest - mortars, concretes, stuccos, mural paintings, rocks, tiles, and metals.
- Study of degradation mechanisms of building materials.
- Development of materials for heritage conservation.
- Implementation of digital tools for the dissemination and preservation of architectural and archaeological heritage.
- Valorisation of industrial and mineral byproducts.
- Mineralogical and microstructural characterization of materials.
ACTIVITY DEVELOPED
- Participation in several scientific and technological research projects, national and international, in the areas of concrete degradation due to internal expansive reactions and the conservation of architectural and archaeological heritage.
- Principal Investigator of 3 research projects funded by FCT.
- Participation in more than 80 contract research projects.
- Responsible for the installation at LNEC of laboratories for mineralogical and microstructural characterization of materials, and reactivity to alkalis and internal sulfates in concrete.
- Teaching activity in the area of concrete durability and conservation and restoration of cultural heritage.
