        ACTIVITY

Leads the Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics Unit, coordinating LNEC’s activities in that field, with a dedicated and highly qualified team for carrying out advanced studies, applied research and physical and numerical modelling, covering topics ranging from the seismic action generation to the assessment of seismic behaviour, infrastructure reliability and risk, as well as its management and mitigation in the built heritage.

Dedicated to the development of seismic risk and structural vulnerability studies, regulations for structural and geotechnical design, as well as the assessment of structural performance based on numerical modelling and intense experimental activity both in laboratory and in situ.

Has developed advanced tools for the numerical analysis of structures and innovative methodologies for experimental testing. Responsible for various studies and scientific research projects in the field of earthquake engineering and seismic risk. Also, an experienced structural designer, having worked as design engineer for several years, and a regular consultant for the World Bank and the European Commission.

Currently serves as Technical Secretary of Sub-Committee 8 (Eurocode 8) of Technical Committee 250 (Structural Eurocodes) of the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN/TC250/SC8), being also a member of various Working Groups in this field, actively collaborating in the development of European structural design codes.

Member of the Executive Committee of the EFEHR Consortium (European Facilities for Earthquake Hazard and Risk), responsible for maintaining and developing European seismic hazard and risk models.

Received several scientific awards and delivered invited lectures at various technical and scientific events, being author of a large number of technical and scientific publications and reports and supervising relevant postgraduate work. Regularly invited to lecture at national and international universities, having been a lecturer at the university for several years.
