        Head of Unit



        The Planning, Traffic, and Safety Unit carries out studies in three main areas:


        · Road traffic system operation, particularly as regards road safety and mobility.

        · Planning of surface transportation systems, including the evaluation of their environmental and economic impacts.

        · Information systems and support to the integration of C-ITS (Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems) in road safety management.

        Activity

        The Planning, Traffic and Safety Unit  carries out a range of activities, including:



        · Research and Innovation (R&I).

        · Provision of Science and Technology services.

        · Specialised technical consultancy activities in support of the construction industry.

        · Road safety inspections of motorways and roads in operation.

        · Participation in technical committees.

        · Advanced training.



        The Unit has developed technical manuals for applying the road infrastructure safety management tools within the scope of the Directive (EU) 2019/1936, as well as recommendations applicable to the design of urban streets and the geometric design of interurban roads.


        The Unit has also represented Portugal in international technical forums related to its areas of intervention - PIARC, CEN, COST, ITF, TRB (AKD20), FERSI, ECTRI, IRTAD and EC working groups.


        Traffic observation studies, testing road characteristics, and the collection and management of information on traffic operations and on transport systems performance are carried out in the realm of an affiliated Operational Unit/Laboratory:


        Road Traffic Equipment and Analysis Laboratory.


        The Unit has devised and supported master's and doctoral theses in collaboration with Portuguese and foreign universities, as well as providing accredited training for road safety auditors and inspectors.
