For the past three years, the Geotechnical Department of the National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC) has been monitoring the construction of the Lisbon Metro's Yellow and Green Line extensions. This major infrastructure project, set to connect the future Rato station with Cais do Sodré station, is a critical component of the city's metro expansion plan, aimed at significantly enhancing urban mobility.
The construction involves the addition of new Estrela and Santos stations, three ventilation shafts, and a stretch of tunnel excavated underground from Rato station to Largo do Chafariz da Esperança, followed by an open-cut tunnel section extending to Cais do Sodré station. This phase also requires the modification and/or reinforcement of building foundations within its influence zone.
At present, the project is approaching completion, with excavation work largely finalised and the construction of reinforced concrete structures advancing at a steady pace.
Alongside construction supervision through regular weekly or fortnightly meetings and site visits, LNEC has also provided Lisbon Metro with specialised technical support, delivering expert assessments on specific matters related to geotechnics, materials science, structural engineering, and seismic resilience.
