Second and third-year students in the Civil and Environmental Engineering program at Lusófona University had an unique opportunity for technical immersion at LNEC. Since the group was small, the visit allowed exceptional interaction with researchers and real-world testing environments. The “field trip” began with a presentation session and a screening of an institutional film in the Auditorium, which opened the door to the world of advanced research conducted in Portugal.

Next, the group explored the Department of Hydraulics and Environment, visiting two key research centers. At the Urban Water Unit, the future engineers got a behind-the-scenes look at efficient water management, treatment, and the resilience of urban systems in the face of climate change. Shortly after, the visit continued to the Ports and Maritime Structures Unit, where they were introduced to the mathematical and numerical models used in the design and safety of breakwaters and large coastal and port infrastructures.

This experience allowed them to see firsthand the practical impact of what they are learning in this program and to understand how civil engineering and the environment go hand in hand to design more sustainable cities. Best of luck!
