20 May 2026
On May 20, World Metrology Day is celebrated, marking the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875 — a historic milestone that laid the foundations of the International System of Units and modern measurement.
At LNEC, metrology has been a key pillar since the 1970s. Through its accredited laboratory, measurement traceability is ensured, along with equipment calibration and the assessment of uncertainties associated with testing, contributing to technical reliability across various fields of Civil Engineering.
In Portugal, this field has evolved in coordination with the National Quality Infrastructure and European networks, with LNEC recognized as a reference institution, particularly in the areas of flow rate and liquid flow velocity.
Today, we celebrate the importance of measurement — invisible, yet essential to our daily lives.
