Two technicians from the Guinea-Bissau Engineering Laboratory had the opportunity to undertake a one-month internship at the Transport Infrastructures Unit of the LNECs Transportation Department. This experience focused on the area of bituminous mixtures, an essential topic for the construction and maintenance of road infrastructures. During this period, the interns, accompanied by specialized technicians from LNEC, participated in several experimental activities of this Unit, analysed the various constituents and learned techniques for testing materials with the incorporation of recycled materials, among others, for road pavements. During the internship, they also had the opportunity to follow-up tests on bituminous binders at the Organic and Metallic Materials Unit of the LNEC’s Materials Department.

The internship aimed not only to strengthen the technical knowledge of the participants, but also to create exchange bridges between Portugal and Guinea-Bissau. "We are going to take very good examples from what we experienced here. For us this experience was important because we did a lot of tests that we had never done before. We learned about European standards that are applied here in Portugal and we will try to apply them in Bissau", they stated.

In addition to the technical work, Abubacar Bangurá and Hivan Zamorrano Djata had the opportunity to understand the challenges and solutions applied in Portugal in the construction and rehabilitation of roads pavements, based on European standards. This direct contact with the Portuguese reality provided a practical vision that could be adapted to the needs of his country of origin. Sharing knowledge and methodologies reinforces the positive impact of international cooperation in the engineering sector.
