24 November 2025
On 2 December 2025, CIUL - Lisbon Urban Information Centre will host a session led by Ana Maria Carvalho Pinheiro Vieira, a researcher at LNEC, on the topic of ‘Geothermal Energy: Future Prospects for Clean and Stable Energy’.
The session will address the growing role of thermal energy from the Earth's surface layers in air conditioning, thermal storage and other applications, highlighting its stability, local availability and relevance in the energy transition and adaptation to climate change. This resource, in line with European decarbonisation policies and the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda, has driven a multidisciplinary approach involving engineering, geotechnics, energy and urban planning.
The researcher will also explore the potential for integrating shallow geothermal systems into the urban fabric - from individual applications to neighbourhood and district networks - reinforcing the importance of this technology for more efficient and resilient cities.
The session will be moderated by Carlos Contente de Sousa (Lisboa E-Nova).
