LNEC Researchers at the 41st IAHR World Congress, Singapore, 22–27 June 2025

        22 September 2025

LNEC was represented at the 41st IAHR World Congress - International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research, held in Singapore, by the on-site participation of researchers Ana Estela Barbosa (NRE/DHA), Ana Mendonça (NPE/DHA) and Sílvia Amaral (NRE/DHA), strengthening its active role within the international scientific community.

During the event, LNEC contributed with a diverse and active presence, including the co-organisation of a technical workshop, oral presentations and scientific posters, reflecting the excellence and breadth of research developed at the laboratory.

        Technical Workshop:

Advances in Experimental and Numerical Modelling of Embankment Dam and Fluvial Dike Breaching

Co-organised by Sílvia Amaral (LNEC) and Matthew Halso (ETH Zürich), within the scope of the closing activities of the DikesFPro Project – Integration of data and models for understanding dike breaching processes.

The workshop highlighted the latest advances in applied research on the breaching of hydraulic earth structures, presenting experimental and numerical tools of high relevance for hydraulic safety and risk management.

        LNEC Oral presentations:

            Barbosa, A.E., Branco, A. & Canastra, F. (2025)

Connecting water, biodiversity and cultural ecosystems services – Research and Practice.

            Martinez, C., Mendonça, A., Lemos, R., Fortes, C.J.E.M., Mendes, D. (2025)

Wave overtopping of rock and stepped coastal revetments with very shallow foreshores.

            Mendonça, A., Lemos, R., Fortes, C.J.E.M., Martinez, C., Girão, H. (2025)

Evaluating breakwater damage progression: experimental and theoretical insights.

            Jónatas, R., Gouveia, F., Amaral, S., Aleixo, R., Viseu, T., Ferreira, R. (2025)

Fluvial dike breach evolution by overtopping: an analysis of hydrodynamic and morphodynamic experimental data.

These presentations addressed key topics such as river and coastal hydraulics, coastal management, ecosystem services and water resilience, underlining the quality and diversity of LNEC’s research.

        Posters presented:

            Barbosa, A.E. & Rebelo, M. (2025)

Innovative approaches to harmonise water, nature and society.

            Barbosa, A.E. (2025)

Assessing and Promoting Public Perception of Water and Biodiversity Interconnectedness.

These works, developed under the European project NATURELAB (Horizon Europe,  - Project NATURELAB), coordinated at LNEC by Engineers Ana Estela Barbosa and Margarida Rebelo, reinforce the importance of integrating water, biodiversity, and society.
