Researcher António Santos Silva from LNEC, together with Engineer Esperanza Menéndez Méndez from the Instituto de Ciencias de la Construcción Eduardo Torroja, are the editors of this book. LNEC researcher João Custódio also contributed to the book, having coordinated and co-authored Chapter 4.
This book presents the work of the RILEM TC 258-AAA WP3 and serves as a comprehensive review of the role of alkalis in concrete concerning the alkali-silica reaction (ASR). Chapter 1 investigates various aspects of the ASR related to prevention, characterisation, and the time development of the ASR, along with the influencing factors.
Chapter 2 offers an in-depth analysis of the internal alkalis in the concrete components, while Chapter 3 concerns the external alkalis. Chapter 4 provides valuable information about standardisation and regulations to prevent and minimise degradation caused by ASR. Finally, the Annex examines different structures, primarily pavements with a flat shape and low volume of concrete, and dams with a substantial volume of massive concrete and varying tension fields.
