In October, LNEC welcomed a materials technician from the Civil Engineering Laboratory of São Tomé and Príncipe (LECSTP) for an internship within the scope of the "CPLP Engineering Laboratory Training Program to support good governance and sustainable construction".
The internship took place at the Cementitious Materials Center of the LNEC Materials Unit and aimed to strengthen the technical and scientific capabilities of the São Tomé professional, Alexandre Bonfim.
During the internship, the LECSTP technician had the opportunity to collaborate with LNEC NMC technicians in carrying out physical tests on concrete aggregates, mechanical tests for cement, developing skills in applied research methodologies, especially in monitoring the test in concrete cores and beams.
"The aggregates in Portugal are different in their resistance and physical characteristics compared to ours, which are made of basalt; the quality here is very good. I leave this internship very enriched and with a greater understanding of what we are doing and what we have to improve in São Tomé and Príncipe", said Alexandre Bonfim, recognizing that tests at LNEC are faster thanks to automated equipment.
Alexandre Bonfim, who demonstrated his desire to return to LNEC in the future, intends to promote the importance of modernization in his country in order to encourage the development of local solutions to the challenges currently faced in housing and infrastructure.
