22 May 2026
The LNEC Lisbon Conference 2026 will take place on 21–22 October under the main theme “Dams and Energy Transition”.
Theme 2, "Storage and System Flexibility", addresses the challenges posed by the energy transition and the growing integration of renewable energy into increasingly distributed and weather‑dependent power systems.
As solar and wind generation expand, ensuring flexibility, production‑consumption balance, and security of supply becomes critical. Hydropower storage, particularly through reversible (pumped‑storage) systems, stands out as a large‑scale, efficient and environmentally sustainable solution with major economic and social relevance in Portugal and Spain.
This theme will bring together regulators, producers, researchers and industry to discuss key questions such as:
- What is the role of hydropower in ensuring electric grid stability and resilience against critical events?
- What is the importance of reversible hydroelectric plants (pumped storage) for energy storage?
- How are other non-hydropower renewable sources being incorporated into electric energy storage?
- What is the current state and what are the prospects for renewable energy production and management in Portugal and Spain, highlighting the role of cooperation within the Iberian Peninsula?
A theme designed to spark informed debate and shape the future of the Iberian energy system.
