LNEC carries out seismic tests simulating historic dry-stack masonry buildings

        22 August 2025

LNEC is carrying out shake table tests for an European research project dedicated to the behaviour of historic structures in earthquake scenarios, through tests on dry-stack U-shaped walls representative of existing unreinforced masonry buildings in various seismic zones in Europe, including the Azores, for example.

The research project “New STANDARDS for seismic assessment of cultural HERITAGE” (Stand4Heritage) is led by the Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering (ISISE) of the University of Minho and funded by the EXCELLENT SCIENCE program of the European Research Council (ERC) under contract number 833123.

Dario Vecchio, a PhD student at ISISE, in collaboration with LNEC, is part of this project and his activity is supported by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) through the grant contract with reference 2023.03854.BDANA.

The main objective is to study out-of-plane collapse mechanisms - namely two-way bending in the façade plan.
