During her internship at LNEC, at Urban Water Unit from Hydrualics and Environment Department, Ariadna Parrales, a civil engineer from Costa Rica, praised the size of Portugal's scientific infrastructure and the strong link between research and real-world challenges.
The young researcher worked on nature-based solutions for rainwater management in an urban context.
As well as comparing design codes between Portugal and Costa Rica, Ariadna took part in technical sessions and learned about infrastructure projects that are over a century old, something that does not exist in her home country. The experience allowed her to identify good practices that could be adapted to the Latin American reality.
"It's good to see this kind of investment in scientific research and to realise how science here is truly at the service of the people", she said.
