The National Meeting of the Civil Engineering Speciality College of the Portuguese Engineers’ Association took place at the Cupertino de Miranda Foundation, bringing together leading experts to discuss the future of civil engineering in Portugal. Under the theme “AXES OF PROGRESS: Housing, Urban Mobility and Infrastructure, with a focus on High Speed”, the meeting established itself as a prime forum for reflection on the structural challenges shaping the development of the country and its cities.
Against a backdrop of rapid urban transformation, civil engineering has emerged as an essential pillar in the development of sustainable and innovative solutions. The event brought together academics, business representatives and public decision-makers, fostering a high-level technical and scientific debate on topics such as smart mobility, affordable housing and resilient infrastructure. The presentations highlighted the importance of applied research, technological innovation and scientific rigour, particularly in light of the demanding challenges posed by the implementation of high-speed rail in Portugal.
The sharing of knowledge and discussion regarding the safety, performance and durability of infrastructure successfully highlighted the importance of Portuguese engineering in both national and international contexts, before a packed auditorium. The need for integrated approaches, based on advanced modelling, continuous monitoring and adaptation to climate change, was also emphasised.
The closing session featured a presentation by engineer Laura Caldeira, President of LNEC, whose participation lent the event particular institutional significance. The meeting concluded with a clear consensus on the strategic role of civil engineering in the country’s sustainable development and in the formulation of public policies based on sound technical knowledge.
