LNEC Makes Progress on the CAMBER Project

        06 November 2026

AIT - The Austrian Institute of Technology, LNEC’s partner in the CAMBER project (Connected and Adaptive Maintenance for Safer Urban and Secondary Roads) - has completed an extensive data collection campaign in the Cascais pilot.

Using the high-performance RoadLab measurement vehicle and the instrumented MoProVe (Motorcycle Probe Vehicle) motorcycle, the AIT team conducted detailed surveys on selected sections of the municipality’s road network. The equipment enabled the collection of high-precision reference data on road geometry, slope, transverse and longitudinal pavement regularity, pavement surface condition, and the location of infrastructure elements. Data on motorcycle driving dynamics, including trajectories and accelerations, were also collected to better understand the specific challenges faced by two-wheeled motor vehicles.

The campaign was carried out in close collaboration with LNEC, whose local expertise and on-site support were essential to ensuring that the collected data was accurate, reliable, and relevant for characterizing the road network.

The collected data will serve as the basis for developing a digital twin of the road network. These digital representations will make it possible to simulate different usage scenarios, improve the efficiency of maintenance planning, and, ultimately, enhance road safety.

The data collected will also contribute to CAMBER’s work in the areas of road asset management and road safety, providing a solid foundation of observations for the development of innovative solutions. Through these activities, the Cascais pilot project is helping to create safer and more resilient road networks.
