Multilayer external wall thermal insulation systems are widely used in new constructions and for the retrofitting of building façades. Despite the increasing use as constructive solution, significant anomalies have been frequently identified on these systems only few years after their application, raising questions on their long-term durability. This paper focuses on the effects of one-year natural ageing and artificial ageing through hygrothermal cycles (heat/rain and heat/cold) on the water performance (capillary water absorption and drying kinetics), bio-susceptibility (mould development) and surface properties (colour, gloss, and roughness) of four multilayer external wall thermal insulation systems (three ETICS and a thermal rendering system). Results showed a significant loss of surface hydrophobicity after ageing. Considering the 24 h water absorption results, an increase up to 73% and 432% was obtained for the naturally and artificially aged systems, respectively, and when compared to the reference unaged systems. The drying kinetics was affected by ageing, with increases of the drying resistance ranging between 47% and 122% after artificial ageing. Traces of mould growth were observed on the artificially aged systems; however, no growth was detected on either the unaged or the one-year naturally aged systems. Substantial colour change for all systems after ageing was observed, confirming aesthetic alteration. Results contribute towards the development of implemented artificial ageing protocols, as well as for the delivery of multilayer thermal systems with enhanced performance and durability.

Renders should have an adequate resistance to impacts, since they must protect the substrate. The use of fibres may enhance the energy absorbed when the mortars are submitted to an impact load, which contributes to postpone the first crack, and control its propagation and width. In this study, the impact strength was measured by a falling mass from different heights. The cracking pattern and the impact energy for the appearance of the first crack and until failure were evaluated. An artificial accelerated ageing test was also performed, and the impact resistance was analysed before and after ageing. The use of concrete materials in Portugal, namely reinforced concrete, began in the 19th century. However, during the 20th century, the increase in the application of this composite material, alongside the use of hydraulic binders, led to a disruption of traditional construction techniques and enhanced generalized application in concrete structures, combining aesthetics with functionality. In this paper, the authors will present and discuss several physical and mechanical characteristics of reinforced concrete materials from 12 award-winning architectural buildings constructed between the 1930s and the end of the 20th century in Lisbon, Portugal. These results are vital to evaluate their durability, as those buildings have an undiscussable heritage value in the context of 20th-century buildings

Among thermal insulation solutions for historic walls, thermal renders and plasters appear to be a very feasible option. Thus, this work analyses commercially available thermal mortars suitable for the scope.An extensive experimental campaign showed that testing single materials only, which is the standard requirement for thermal mortar-based systems, is in fact not sufficient for understanding the potential impact of the intervention on walls: whole-systems should also be examined. This study provides a detailed characterization of materials and systems, useful as a database for forthcoming investigations on compatibility and efficacy for application on historic walls, via numerical hygrothermal simulations.

The purpose of the paper is to describe the main functional elements with defects in illegal residentialbuildings. Three research questions are addressed: What are the main functional elements with defectsin buildings and in dwellings? What are the main defects found? In which way these defects affect theuse of buildings?The defects were identified during a survey to the building stock of the Cova da Moura District(Amadora, Portugal), carried out in 2008. This district is made of illegal constructions, occupies anarea of 16.5 ha and has approximately 5,000 inhabitants. During the survey 833 buildings and1884 units were inspected.The main results are: a) only 13% of these building presented defects in the building structure; b)about 60% of the buildings have defects in the roofing systems (e.g., damp and mould, infiltrations);c) more than 84% of the dwellings have defects in the technical installation such as gas or electricalinstallations most of them classified as severe defects.The main conclusion is that most of the defects detected configure serious risk scenarios, particularlyin terms of the minimum habitability conditions and fire safety. However, defects related to structuralstability were not as serious as expected for this kind of construction.

This work is inserted in a wider project aiming at the conservation and durability of historical renders, through compatible techniques and materials; in particular the restitution of cohesion of historical renders is studied. Surface consolidation, directed to restore cohesion and stability, is based on the use of materials with aggregating properties. This operation is reached usually through the use of inorganic or mineral consolidants, which are preferred to organic ones, due to better compatibility and durability. Based on the results of previous studies, two mineral compatible products were selected: a commercial dispersion of nanoparticles of calcium hydroxide in propanol and a calcium-silicate product, consisting on a limewater dispersion of ethyl silicate. Consolidation products were applied on mortar specimens (mortar prisms and mortars applied on bricks) in order to assess their efficacy by determining their microstructural and physical-mechanical properties, before and after consolidation treatment. A low binder ratio mortar was studied with both consolidants.Microstructural (optical and SEM microscopy) and chemical analysis of the consolidation products and of the consolidated samples were performed; physical-mechanical analysis, namely superficial hardness is reported.

This work is inserted in a wider project aiming at the conservation and durability of historical renders, through compatibles techniques and materials; in particular the restitution of cohesion of historical renders, turned friable by the loss of binder due to physical or chemical actions, is studied. Surface consolidation, directed to restore cohesion and stability, is based on the use of materials with aggregating properties. This operation is reached usually through the application of organic or mineral consolidants, but inorganic consolidants (such as calcium hydroxide or ethyl silicate) are becoming preferred due to better compatibility and durability.Based on the results of previous studies, two mineral compatible products were selected for the first phase of tests: a commercial suspension of nanoparticles of calcium hydroxide in propanol (Nanorestore); a silicate product, consisting on a limewater dispersion of ethyl silicate.Consolidation products were than applied on different mortars samples previously prepared, in order to assess their efficacy by determining their physical, mechanical and microstructural properties before and after the consolidation treatment. Mechanical and physical analyses were performed, such as compression and flexural strenght and superficial hardness. Microstructural and chemical analyses of the consolidation product and of the consolidated samples are also reported.

Resumo: Os revestimentos pré-doseados com base em cimento (monocamada ou não) são constituídos por uma mistura de pó de cimento, cargas minerais e diversos adjuvantes, seleccionados e doseados em fábrica. Em obra, apenas é necessária a adição de água para se proceder à amassadura. A apreciação técnica destes produtos é feita com base em ensaios de laboratório, a partir dos quais se caracteriza o seu comportamento mecânico e físico. Por outro lado, a avaliação do desempenho dos revestimentos durante a sua vida útil refere-se aos produtos aplicados e sujeitos a determinadas condições climáticas e ambientais, logo deve ser efectuada em obra. O recurso a ensaios in situ permite uma avaliação quantitativa desse desempenho. No entanto, a actual inexistência de normas, de especificações e de ensaios, que enquadrem esse tipo de avaliação, requer um trabalho de base de fixação de condições de ensaio e de interpretação dos respectivos resultados. Neste trabalho foi efectuada uma análise do comportamento mecânico de revestimentos pré-doseados com base em cimento, através de ensaios laboratoriais e de ensaios efectuados sobre os mesmos produtos aplicados em muretes localizados em ambiente exterior, utilizando várias técnicas de ensaio in situ. Os produtos foram aplicados por projecção mecânica, com uma espessura variável entre 15 e 20 mm e foram ensaiados in situ com idades superiores a quatro anos. Os valores obtidos para cada revestimento com os vários ensaios in situ foram comparados entre si e confrontados com os resultados dos ensaios de laboratório realizados à data das aplicações. Desta análise extraíram-se conclusões sobre as técnicas de ensaio in situ, o significado dos valores obtidos e a sua utilidade para a avaliação do desempenho de revestimentos pré-doseados de cimento.

Abstract In interventions on historic renders and plasters, the first step is to decide upon the strategy: repair or substitution, based on an evaluation of the cultural value of the render or plaster, of the building itself and on a careful diagnosis of the typology of defects, their density and reparability. New renders or repaired renders should fulfil the main functions they are required to, especially protection and aesthetic functions Compatible materials should always be used. Compatibility is needed for durability, not of the render, but of the wall as a whole, and also for preserving the documentary and symbolic value of the building as well as its image. Compatibility is defined in relation to the substrate and the existing mortars. Therefore tests need to be carried out on the old materials and on possible solutions, to compare characteristics and assist in the selection of the best. It is acceptable to begin using non-destructive or slightly destructive in-situ tests, because with them it is possible to collect useful information quickly and without destruction of the historic renders. Simple mechanical and physical tests can be carried out on the old mortars and a few chemical tests can also be performed, with portable equipment. If rigorous and complete tests are needed, some samples can be collected and tested in the laboratory, using methods adapted to non-regular, possibly friable specimens. The characteristics of the mortars to use can be established, based on the results obtained, in order to fulfil both functionality and compatibility. However, sometimes it is not possible to obtain enough data about old materials, especially concerning masonry as a whole, which is more difficult to test than mortars. For this situation, some general requirements have been established, based on previous work carried out on Portuguese historic masonry buildings, which can be used without risk of damaging existing materials. Decisions concerning the materials to use, especially binder materials, should also take into account the climatic and environmental conditions. Appropriate application techniques, workmanship and curing conditions are indispensable in achieving good aesthetic, physical and mechanical results. Therefore it is important to know what conditions are available for the application phase. An effective knowledge of the historic materials and of the possible compatible solutions, of their characteristics and problems, is essential; tests are an important tool but the interpretation of their results in order to take useful decisions is a complex task, requiring a multidisciplinary team efficiently coordinated.

Personal well-being, health and productivity of building occupants depend to a large extent on available thermal and visual conditions.Thermal and visual requirements have changed across centuries. Last century, as a result of the economic growth that occurred in developed societies, the satisfaction of those requirements gained importance. In a society and period where energy was abundant and cheap, the easiest way to provide desired indoor conditions consisted in the systematic use of artificial conditioning (AC) and electric lighting. This chapter proposes an introductory conceptual framework to better understand some aspects of everyday relations of people and spaces. From the perspective of anthropology of space, it first provides a reflection on issues that are important for understanding these relationships, to then, in a second step, address the relevance of walking as a method to trigger a sensitive path. This chapter aims to raise the interest for urban planning that is more attentive to the multidimensionality of socio-territorial relations. To explore the sensitiveness of urban space it is important to consider (a) the perspective of users in terms of symbolic dimensions, socio-spatial and cultural practices, and sense of happiness and well-being; (b) the articulation between behavioural dimensions, sociocultural dynamics and the environment; (c) the approximation of concepts and categories to understand space from the perspective of different disciplines. Resumo: Ambiente construído é um conceito amplo e difuso; talvez essa seja uma de suas virtudes capitais. A pesquisa nessa área de fronteiras tão impre­cisas permite abordagens de temas, escalas e métodos diversificados. Neste livro, a reunião de ensaios feitos por pesquisadores de diferentes países sobre variados tópicos, com apropriações metodológicas tão diversas, reafirma o caráter múltiplo desse campo. Nesta ótica, destaca-se o papel de uma observação sistemática e minuciosa das complexas interações que resultam da relação entre os múltiplos e diversificados usos dos espaços públicos urbanos, as apropriações, contra apropriações, representações do espaço e respectivas tem­poralidades envolvidas, considerando a sua ligação com propostas arquitetônico-urbanísticas de desenho e intervenção. Este livro é o registro de um momento do campo, mas também representa a possibilidade de novas incursões que podem alargar suas fronteiras. Abstract: Built environment is a broad and diffuse concept; perhaps this is one of its capital virtues. Research in this area of such inaccurate bound­aries allows approaches from diverse themes, scales and methods. In this book, the gathering of essays by researchers from different countries on various topics, with such diverse methodological ap­propriations, reaffirms the multiple character of this field. In this perspective, it highlights the role of a systematic and thorough observation of the complex interactions that result from the relationship between the multiple and diverse uses of urban public spaces, appropriations, against appropriations, representations of space and respective temporalities involved, considering their connection with architectural-urbanistic proposals of design and intervention. This book registers a specific moment in the field but it also rep­resents the possibility of further inroads that may broaden its borders.

As praças de uma cidade são espaços públicos consagrados historicamente à vida coletiva. Nesta publicação estão reunidos artigos que têm algumas importantes praças da área central da cidade do Rio de Janeiro como tema de estudo. As praças são analisadas a partir de suas dimensões material e simbólica, como produtos de ações que perpassam vários projetos para o espaço público. São destacadas as praças XV de novembro; Tiradentes; Mauá e Onze -esta última, já não mais existente fisicamente. As praças, portanto, se afirmam como estruturas espaciais de destaque no ambiente construído e como lugar para a representação da memória em tempos de constantes transformações. - The city's squares are public spaces historically dedicated to collective life. This publication brings together articles that have some important squares in the central area of the city of Rio de Janeiro as their subject of study. The squares are analyzed from their material and symbolic dimensions, as products of actions that permeate various projects for public space. There are highlighted the squares XV de Novembro; Tiradentes, Mauá and Onze - the latter, no longer physically existing. The squares, therefore, assert themselves as prominent spatial structures in the built environment and as a place for the representation of memory in times of constant transformation

A partir de uma incursão teórica sobre a noção de memória social, investiga-se como esta tem sido um recurso para incrementar a conexão das pessoas com os rios urbanos. A reflexão realiza-se no âmbito do estudo de caso presentemente em curso em Lisboa e que se dedica à investigação do contributo da memória no resgate da paisagem fluvial para o imaginário social e urbano contemporâneo. Para o efeito, aqui parte-se da relação da memória com os espaços materiais, naturais e mentais das sociedades humanas ligados à recordação de experiências passadas. Neste sentido, explora-se o seu contributo para recuperar os cursos de água para o imaginário social e urbano contemporâneo. Analisa-se como a memória tem sido discutida relativamente aos rios urbanos e que, em decorrência da iminência de riscos e de situações de catástrofes associadas ao sistema fluvial urbano, se tem destacado como recurso para a criação de dinâmicas de adaptação e resiliência. Seguidamente, analisam-se iniciativas que, fazendo recurso à memória ligada aos rios, contribuem para sensibilizar e influenciar a conexão das pessoas com os cursos de água em meio urbano, ainda que isto possa ser sugestivamente. The importance of the selection of the type of aggregates and their effects on the modification of mortar properties is widely recognized. However, despite recent scientific advances on the effect of aggregates on the properties of mortars and concretes, few studies show how the characteristics of aggregates affect the microstructure and consequently, the final quality of mortars. Moreover, in general, existing studies show that there is an approach mostly related to the use of Portland cement, which several researchers have already shown that have adverse effects, when it is used in rehabilitation works of ancient buildings.In the context of rehabilitation, this factor is particularly relevant, since the main objective is to obtain mortarswith specific characteristics and performances compatible with those that exist in old masonry. The aggregate, as an integral part of mortars, and in some cases defined as their "skeleton", has a direct influence on themicrostructure of mortars, which, in turn, influences the physical, chemical and mechanical properties, as well as the finishing and the final appearance of the renders, especially in the case of lime mortars.Therefore, the present study intends to contribute to a better knowledge of the influence of mineralogical andphysical characteristics (grain size distribution and shape) of the natural aggregates on the mortars

No âmbito da revisão do regime de arrendamento urbano (NRAU), foi desenvolvido no Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil (LNEC) o Método de Avaliação do Estado de Conservação de imóveis (MAEC). Este método permite determinar, de forma expedita, o estado de conservação de edifícios para efeitos de atualização de rendas, mediante a realização de inspeções visuais ao local, efetuadas por técnicos qualificados.O MAEC está em vigor desde novembro de 2006, tendo sido realizadas mais de 30 000 vistorias durante os primeiros quatro anos de implementação. Em junho de 2010, cerca de 2400 técnicos avaliadores estavam inscritos para realizar vistorias com o MAEC.Considerou se assim oportuno realizar um estudo que analisa a experiência obtida com a aplicação do MAEC. Para o efeito, foram analisados os resultados das vistorias realizadas com o MAEC entre janeiro de 2007 e maio de 2010 e a opinião que os principais intervenientes têm sobre o MAEC (i.e., técnicos avaliadores e técnicos das Comissões Arbitrais Municipais). Como complemento, foi realizado um estudo comparativo do MAEC com 16 outros métodos que avaliam o estado de conservação de imóveis (7 portugueses e 9 estrangeiros).Com base nos resultados destas análises, foram avançadas propostas de aperfeiçoamento do MAEC de dois tipos: (i) propostas para simplificar a aplicação da atual metodologia de avaliação e aumentar o nível de informação recolhida e de rigor dos resultados; e (ii) propostas para que a metodologia de avaliação do MAEC permita obter resultados complementares para além daqueles para os quais foi originalmente concebido mas que a experiência de aplicação tem vindo a provar necessários.Como conclusão geral, verifica se que o MAEC cumpre os objetivos principais para os quais foi concebido. Porém, é possível introduzir alguns aperfeiçoamentos que contribuirão quer para a simplificação quer para o aumento do rigor da aplicação do método.

As telhas cerâmicas são muito utilizadas há séculos no revestimento decoberturas inclinadas em Portugal e em muitos outros países. Alguns casos dedegradação acelerada têm vindo a afectar a durabilidade das telhas.Para avaliar o desempenho de telhas cerâmicas em ambiente marítimo foidesenvolvido um estudo experimental baseado em ensaios de envelhecimentoartificial acelerado.Este estudo compreende a caracterização de diversos tipos de telhascerâmicas, o desenvolvimento e realização de ensaios de envelhecimentoacelerado realizados em câmara de nevoeiro salino, a avaliação dadegradação provocada pelos ensaios acelerados e a comparação com adegradação sofrida por telhas em exposição natural.O estudo pretende reproduzir em laboratório os mecanismos de degradaçãoobservados em condições reais e identificar as características mais afectadas,procurando relações significativas entre grandezas relevantes medidas nosmateriais antes e depois da acção dos agentes externos.Pretende-se também, com base na análise comparativa dos resultados dosensaios de envelhecimento sobre diferentes tipos de telhas, identificarparâmetros de composição e de fabrico que contribuem para a degradação efornecer assim à indústria dados relevantes para melhorar a durabilidade dastelhas.

O presente trabalho reporta-se ao tema geral da conservação e restauro de revestimentosexteriores de edifícios antigos, destacando-se como tema específico as questões dodesenvolvimento de uma metodologia de estudo e reparação.Com este estudo foi possível um maior entendimento do comportamento dos revestimentosexteriores de edifícios antigos com base em cal, bem como estabelecer um maior rigor naaplicação de metodologias de conservação e restauro, tendo como objectivo principal a definiçãode uma metodologia de restauro conservativa para a salvaguarda das técnicas, da funcionalidadee do aspecto estético original da fachada exterior de edifícios antigos.Os principais contributos deste estudo foram: (i) estabelecer métodos de análises in situ dorevestimento, para conhecimento da sua técnica, da sua história e do seu estado de conservação;(ii) estabelecer métodos de análise das anomalias do revestimento, onde é possível quantificar ograu de deterioração; (iii) escolher a técnica e o produto consolidante adequado para o tratamentodas anomalias; (iv) especificar as distintas técnicas de restauro e definir os diversos produtosconsolidantes existentes para os revestimentos; (v) aplicar materiais tão compatíveis quantopossível com o revestimento, predominantemente compostos por ligantes minerais, dando-sepreferência aos materiais tradicionais, de modo a verificar a sua eficiência através de ensaioslaboratoriais (vi) estabelecer critérios de aplicação para cada produto ensaiado em função daanomalia observada nos revestimentos; (vi) definir uma estratégia de intervenção geral para cadatipo de revestimento e de anomalia.Enfim, o estudo permitiu estabelecer uma metodologia geral de restauro de revestimentos,desenvolvendo todo um conjunto de técnicas de ensaio, critérios de selecção de produtos e deavaliação de resultados, no sentido da melhor preservação do Património Histórico e do melhorcontrolo do processo de restauro.

No presente trabalho apresenta-se um estudo de caracterização térmica, por via analítica , de paredes de alvenaria de utilização corrente em Portugal.Com base no apuramento das características de alguns dos elementos de produção nacional para execução de paredes de alvenaria, definem-se os tipos de paredes que os integram,estabelecem-se para essas paredes uma classificação e uma numeração de referência,e calculam-se, compilam-se e analisam-se em termos comparativos as respectivos característicastérmicas.Em anexos, incluem-se: um exemplo de cálculo das características duma parede(ANEXO I); quadros dessas características para cada tipo de parede (ANEXO II}; e quadrosde síntese das referidas características (ANEXO III).

No presente trabalho apresenta-se um estudo de caracterização térmica, por via an~lítica, dos pavimentos prefabricados aligeirados de produção nacional.Com base no apuramento das características dos pavimentos comercializados com homologação válida em 1980, data do início deste estudo, seleccionaram-se gamas de pavimentosrepresentativas daquela produção, estabeleceu-se uma classificação e uma numeraçãode referência desses pavimentos, e calcularam-se, compilaram-se e analisaram-se em termoscomparativos as respectivas características térm icas.Em anexos, incluem-se: a relação das empresas produtoras dos pavimentos consider~dos no apuramento (Anexo I); um exemplo de cálculo das características de pavimentos(Anexo II); quadros dessas características para cada tipo de pavimento (Anexo III); quadros-síntese das referidas características (Anexo IV) e quadro de registo dos respectivos valoresextremos (Anexo V).

A presente publicação destina-se a apoiar a realização de estudos no âmbito quer daaplicação do Sistema de Certificação Energética (SCE) de edifícios quer das intervençõesde reabilitação térmica dos edifícios existentes, eventualmente visando a verificação documprimento do Regulamento das Características de Comportamento Térmico dos Edifícios(RCCTE).Neste trabalho apresentam-se fichas sumárias descritivas e identificadoras das soluçõescaracterizadas e dos respectivos elementos constituintes, bem como os valoresconvencionais de cálculo das resistências térmicas e dos coeficientes de transmissãotérmica de soluções correntes da envolvente opaca dos edifícios construídos, em geral,antes dos anos 50 do século passado. Apresentam-se ainda alguns elementos decaracterização de soluções adoptadas nas Regiões Autónomas dos Açores e da Madeira.Deste modo a presente publicação visa complementar a Informação Técnica Edifícios (ITE)do LNEC denominada Coeficientes de transmissão térmica de elementos da envolventedos edifícios. Additionally, it is important to use digital tools such as interactive maps, videos, and photographs to help bring the story to life and to engage visitors in the cultural significance of the site.

Establishing relationships with citizens and stakeholders involves creating an enabling environment for social learning and innovative local collaboration in knowledge co-creation and experimentation. For establishing these relationships in an experiment, the experiment needs time, efforts must be dedicated to network building, reaching out to different groups, learning about different perspectives, needs, and interests. These substantial efforts tend to be easily underestimated. Activities should build on and respond to local needs; therefore, local stakeholders should be involved in the whole process including project definition and agenda should be constructed in a co-creative way and enable or even enforce the active commitment of local stakeholders. Co-creation is an open learning and adaptive process inherent to placemaking, which can be established as a possibility of engaging citizens and stakeholders in participatory processes as co-designers, co-producers and decision-makers [1]. Co-creation and co-design are linked to social innovation, by contributing to create a long-term response to socio-spatial needs and increasing empathy between the decision-maker and the end-user (of the heritage asset), the place and/or product [2]
