The availability of clean energy of wind waves is enough to meet current demand of the world, attracting researches to find devices with good performance to extract this type of energy. The oscillating water column converter is a type of device that has been extensively studied for this purpose. This paper describes a numerical analysis of an onshore oscillating water column device taking into account hydrodynamic and aerodynamic coupling, performance curves of the turbine and air pressure control by a relief valve. The numerical analyses are carried out by the Fluinco model, based on slightly compressible flow method to solve the Navier-Stokes equations, and employing the two-step semi-implicit Taylor-Galerkin method. O conhecimento dos esforços resultantes da interacção de uma onda com um quebra-mar verticaltorna-se essencial no dimensionamento deste tipo de estruturas. No presente trabalho, o modelo numérico SPHyCE, baseado numa metodologia de tipo SPH - Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics, é utilizado para o cálculo das forças num quebra-mar vertical. Para analisar a evolução das forças de impacto foram consideradas várias condições de profundidade no pé da estrutura e de altura de onda incidente abrangendo diferentes regimes de forças. A comparação dos resultados do modelo numérico com os das formulações empíricas permitiu verificar que as forças previstas são semelhantes para os casos de regime de onda parcialmente estacionária. No entanto, para o regime de forças de impacto, existem diferenças que se devem a diversos factores: i) a rebentação da onda no modelo SPHyCE pode não corresponder necessariamente à forma de rebentação prevista nas formulações empíricas; ii) no caso da rebentação com aprisionamento de ar, cuja influência no valor das forças é relevante, o modelo numérico atinge o seu limite de aplicação, pois não integra o ar e não existem formulações aplicáveis; iii) as formulações empíricas aplicáveis com rebentação dão valores claramente por excesso.

Tanto el perfil como la forma en planta de las playas fluviales vienen establecidos por numerosos factoresentre los que cabría destacar las características del sedimento y la dirección y módulo de la velocidad de la corriente en el río. Sin embargo, en ciertos casos, lejos incluso de su estuario o desembocadura, esta morfología puede estar determinada principalmente por la incidencia del oleaje pese a no tratarse de un entorno marítimo.Se presenta aquí una metodología cualitativa que nos permitirá reconocer los aspectos que influyen en la existencia de este tipo de morfologías. Para ello, se estudiará un caso particular, el de la playa de La Concordia ubicada en la margen izquierda del río Uruguay a 70 km de su desembocadura en el estuario del Rio de la Plata. Asimismo se analizará la forma en planta y se verificará que la misma está determinada por la acción del oleaje.

Three submerged coastal structures on the sandy seabed at SantaMaria delMar (SMM) Beach in Southwest Spain were monitored during the sixmonths after installation, starting inNovember of 2005. The monitoring evaluated the self-burial phenomenon of the 40 precast modular concrete elements of the three structures. Assessment included scouring around the structures, their vertical movement, the sinking velocity of the modules and the resulting beach profiles. Pressure sensors and precision topographies permitted continuous monitoring of the self-burial process for the first time in a full-scale case. Comparison of two bathymetries (one performed immediately prior to installation and another performed six months after installation) indicated slight accretion of the seabed,whereas intermediate topographic surveys indicated extensive scouring around the structures. The three structures began sinking into the sandy bottomplatform immediately after placement and continued until they reached the rocky bottom. This study implemented a new methodology using pressure sensors attached to the concrete modules to monitor the structural sinking. The effects ofwave steepness andwave breaking on the stability of wave-dissipating blocks placed on caisson breakwaters are examined by hydraulic experiments under conditions with and without wave breaking. It is confirmed that there is a clear dependence of the block stability on the wave steepness through the wave-breaking type, such as plunging and spilling breakers. The stability parameter in thespilling breaker case is larger than that in the plunging breaker case. For non-breaking wave conditions, there is no effect of the wave steepness. An empirical stability formula is proposed taking into account the effects of the wave steepness and the wave-breaking type. Finally, by using the stability formula, failure probabilities of the wave-dissipating blocks having a nominal diameter are evaluated by the first-orderreliability method of the Level II reliability analysis.

This paper describes recent advances on maritime structures

This paper presents the numerical simulations done by using the waves2Foam, an OpenFOAM® library, to simulate the propagation of regular waves without breaking in a three-dimensional flume. The numerical code solves the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations and uses a Volume-of-Fluid (VoF) method to identify the free surface. A regular incident wave with a 1.5s period and 0.1m wave height, was considered. This is one of the conditions from the wide range of wave flume tests conducted at the National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC) whose objective was to analyze the hydrodynamics of wave transformation and wave breaking for different incident conditions over a variable bathymetry. Comparisons are made between the numerical and the experimental results. These comparisons include time-series of wave-gauges records at several locations along the flume and the corresponding amplitude spectra; significant wave height and average period evolution along the flume; time-series of the velocity components at one section of the flume, measured at the middle of the water column; and hodograph representation of the velocity components, in the middle of the water column, in the xy, xz, and yz planes along the flume. It was found that the numerical results obtained are close to the experimental data. The observed differences are attributable to numerical inaccuracies as well as the differences between the wave generation method in the numerical and experimental tests.

Descrevem-se os procedimentos para avaliar o caudal médio galgado sobre um trecho de um quebra-mar de taludesa partir das caraterísticas da agitação marítima incidente no mesmo trecho. Apresenta-se uma metodologia paraestimação de valores extremos daquele caudal, partindo das séries temporais da mesma variável, e ilustram-se essesprocedimentos num trecho do molhe oeste do porto de Sines que protege o posto 2 do terminal de granéis líquidos daação da agitação marítima. Este regime de extremos do caudal médio galgado é fundamental para a avaliação do riscode ocorrência de galgamentos não admissíveis no posto 2.

Nowadays, renewable energy is a topic widely discussed in scientific community. Specifically wave energy attracts attention because it has a high energy potential distributed throughout the planet. Oscillating Water Column (OWC) wave energy converter is one of the most studied devices that have promising perspectives to be installed commercially. This study aims investigating the influence of chamber sizes and turbine characteristics dimensions of an OWC device located at the southern Brazilian coast is carried out. Numerical simulations for incident waves with period T = 7 s and 10 s and height H = 1.5 m, by using the FLUENT® model, based on the finite volume method (VFM) are carried out. Efficiencies for different chamber sizes and Wells turbine characteristic relations (kt) in each incident wave are determined. The highest efficiencies were obtained by a chamber with 5 x 5 m and kt = 530 Pa.s/m³ in the case of an incident wave with T = 7s (52%), and 30 x 30 m and kt = 15 Pa.s/m³ at T = 10s (65%).

HIDRALERTA is a forecast, early warning and risk assessment system for port and coastal areas that uses measurements and estimates of sea-waves and water levels to evaluate overtopping/flooding events. The calculation of the mean overtopping discharge over a maritime structure is performed through artificial neural network-based tools and/or empirical formulae. The system is developed in open source software, mainly using the Python language. This paper presents the application of HIDRALERTA system to reproduce the hurricane Lorenzo conditions and impacts at Lajes das Flores port on October 2nd 2019, the most affected port in Azores. This hurricane was regarded as the strongest storm to hit Azores in 20 years. The system predicted the expected results for the hurricane wave characteristics, as well as overtopping discharge volumes. Further validation still need to be improved with the collaboration of the local authorities and the use of historical data.

Numerical models are useful tools to predict the effects of storms in coastal areas. The objective of this work was to simulate the effects of storms in São Pedro de Moel beach by using XBeach. The nearshore sea state was obtained by propagating offshore conditions using the SWAN model. The XBeach model was divided into two setups to analyse overtopping events and coastal evolution. Sensibility tests, calibration, and validation, using information from different storms, were performed for the different setups. The results from the overtopping simulation were compared against results from an empirical formula. The comparison showed lower values obtained with the empirical formula. The coastal evolution run point out to the necessity of having better field data before and after storms to improve the model setting and accuracy.

The assessment of damage evolution in scale model tests of rubble-mound breakwaters can be achieved by comparing eroded depths and volumes between consecutive surveys. This paper focuses on damage evolution of a model of a rubble-mound breakwater and on the novelty of the non-intrusive survey methodologies such as laser scanning and Time of Flight (ToF) techniques, based on point clouds, enabling the extraction of profiles and the calculation of eroded depths and eroded volumes. The final objective of this work is to evaluate the applicability of the estimation the number of displaced armour units, using a non-dimensional damage parameter based on the calculated eroded volume.The paper will also describe the experiments conducted under the RODBreak, a project sponsored by the HYDRALAB+ Transnational Access Program, in which a stretch of a rubble-mound breakwater was built at the wave-current basin of the Leibniz University Hannover (LUH) to assess the structure behavior. Four scan surveys were conducted using a Faro Focus 3D laser scan, as well as a ToF sensor. Those surveys were carried out before and after two test series, in order to evaluate the eroded volume and profile evolution.

Neste trabalho é efetuada a validação do protótipo To-SEAlert para o porto da Ericeira. Para a validação dos resultados do modelo SWAN foram utilizados os dados de duas boias situadas ao largo da Nazaré e para a validação das previsões do sistema de cálculo do grau de risco foram simuladas as depressões Elsa e Fabien (ocorridas em dezembro de 2019) e que foram responsáveis por fortes danos na cabeça do molhe do porto da Ericeira. Verificou-se uma boa concordância entre os dados das boias e os resultados do modelo SWAN, tendo no entanto o modelo reproduzido melhor a direção média e a altura significativa do que o período de pico. Relativamente aos valores de galgamento, os resultados obtidos na simulação das depressões Elsa e Fabien estiveram em concordância com os valores referidos na literatura como causadores de danos nas estruturas.

This work aims to determine the exploitable wave energy resource at six potential sites, located in the Azores, Madeira and Sines breakwater city harbours. For that purpose, the thirdgeneration wave model SWAN is used to estimate the sea-wave conditions over the last 40 years. Boundary conditions of the sea states and wind fields are provided by the climate reanalysis datasets (ERA5). Using those results as inputs to the SWAN model, the sea-states were propagated shoreward, in order to estimate and analyse the wave climate conditions in the regions of interest. By combining the average energy flux per unit-length of wave front and the probability of occurrence of each sea state, the average exploitable annual energy per unit length of wave crest can be computed. The variability of this energy flux is described, since it is of fundamental importance for the efficiency of the Wave Energy Converters (WEC).

In 2017, the RODBreak experiment was conducted. The experiment aimed at characterizing wave run-up, overtopping and damage in rubble-mound breakwaters. The reason for these experiments was the huge impact that climate can have on maritime structures, particularly in rubble mound breakwaters. In fact, the forecast sea level rise associated with more frequent and severe storms will have consequences either on the increase of wave runup, wave overtopping or on damage on existent structures since they were not design for those extreme values. However, for those climate change scenarios, little is known about the actual failure probability of such structures.Within this framework, a stretch of a rubble-mound breakwater was built in a wave basin. Under extreme wave conditions, with different incident wave angles (from 40° to 90°), a total of 49 tests were performed. Each test had different testing parameters, such as significant wave height (Hs), peak period (Tp) and wave direction. Also, for each test, different types of measurements were considered. On-line demonstrations will also be an option, allowing for the widest possible coverage of access for all the participants.The dedicated areas will allow for interactive demonstrations of technological innovations to be carried out by and for industry partners, researchers, and other stakeholders. Demonstrations are an excellent opportunity to introduce conference attendees in an engaging way, as well as to promote new contacts and promising business.

According to the CSA project plan, WP5.2 task objective is to organize technical tours that feature attractive and interactive showcases aiming at engaging participants into novel technologies for all transport modes and enabling stakeholders and their companies to disseminate and even sell their products and applications to all interested parties.

It outlines the work carried out by Samui Design & Management Ltd, supported by HR Wallingford, in relation to the development of a data repository structure that can be adopted by participants of the HYDRALAB+ project.

Reliable prediction of wave run-up/overtopping and structure damage is a key task in the design and safety assessment of coastal and harbor structures. Run-up/overtopping and damage must be below acceptable limits, both in extreme and in normal operating conditions, to guarantee the stability of the structure and the safety of people and assets on and behind the structure. The mean-sea-level rise caused by climate change and its effects on wave climate may increase the number and intensity of run-up/overtopping events and make the existing coastal/harbor structures more vulnerable to damage.Accurate estimates, through physical modelling, of the statistics of overtopping waves for a set of climate change conditions, are needed. The research project HYDRALAB+ (H2020-INFRAIA-2014-2015) gathers an advanced network of environmental hydraulic institutes in Europe, which provides access to a suite of environmental hydraulic facilities. They play a vital role in the development of climate change adaptation strategies, by allowing the direct testing of adaptation measures and by providing data for numerical model calibration and validation. The use of physical (scale) models allows the simulation of extreme events as they are now, and as they are projected to be under different climate change scenarios.The enclosed dataset refers to the experimental work developed at LNEC within HYDRALAB+ and considers 2D damage and overtopping tests for a rock armor slope, with four different approaches to represent storms. Data of free surface elevation, overtopping and damage is presented.

Neste relatório inicial são apresentadas a arquitetura e as caraterísticas gerais dos protótipos do sistema de previsão, alerta e gestão de riscos causados pela agitação marítima para os portos de Madalena do Pico, São Roque do Pico e Praia da Vitória. Os três protótipos em desenvolvimento têm por base uma arquitetura semelhante, com características distintas, nomeadamente no que respeita à localização dos dados de base, às malhas computacionais utilizadas e às características físicas das fronteiras, tanto no plano horizontal (interface terra-mar), como no vertical (batimetria dos fundos). Caracteriza-se o layout geral dos portos, bem como a sua morfologia e operabilidade.
