Implementation of an early warning system in urban drainage infrastructures for direct discharges and flood risk management
Combined sewer systems are often unable to respond adequately to rising watervolumes draining from urban areas during rainfall events, resulting in frequentdirect discharges into receiving waters and floods, with severe environmentaland economic impacts. Despite stricter legislation on pollution control and floodrisk assessment, there are still some challenges regarding the development ofearly warning systems based on water quality issues and fully integrated models. An innovative, real-time urban warning system for flooding and pollution eventswas built for the Alcântara basin (the largest in Lisbon), to provide timelyinformation to wastewater management entities and to civil protection services. The platform provides real-time access to monitoring data and, based on 48-hourprecipitation forecasts, predicts the performance of the system through theintegrated use of mathematical models for both drainage network and estuary.Predictions are automatically compared and validated with on-line data. Thispaper presents the overall design of the system and main results obtained thusfar. The analysis of the system shows the ability of the integrated models torepresent the main spatial and temporal patterns observed, effectively predictingthe system response to precipitation events and estimating volumes dischargedinto the water bodies and their average pollution loads. Furthermore, the overall results strongly indicate UV-Vis spectra to be reliable for TSS and CODestimation in sewer systems.

Improvement of the Lateral Distribution Method based on the mixing layer theory
The accurate prediction of depth-averaged streamwise velocity, boundary shear stress and lateral shearstress are important requisites for the estimation of the flow depth associated with flood events in compoundriver channels composed of main channel and floodplain. This engineering problem may be tackledthrough the analytical solution of the depth-averaged momentum equation. Under uniform flow, thissolution relies on the calibration of three descriptors of the bottom friction, secondary currents and lateralshear stress. In this paper, the analytical solution materialized in the Lateral Distribution Method isrevisited through the consideration of a new panel division. Accurate measurements of streamwise andspanwise velocities as well as of boundary shear stress are used to obtain new predictors of the coefficientsdescribing the effects of bottom friction, secondary currents and lateral shear. The new lateral division of the compound channel into four panels is physically based on the mixinglayer width, which is computed by an iterative procedure easily implemented in practical applications.

Influence of red mud addition on rheological behavior and hardened properties of mortars
This experimental research evaluates the individual and combined influence of red mud particles (RM) and water/binder weight ratio (W/B) on the freshhardened properties and durability of cured mortars up to 360 days. Samples containing up to 40 wt% RM and 0.470.58 W/B were prepared keeping the workability constant. Samples with similar workability showed distinct rheological behavior along time. The yield stress was the best rheological parameter to represent such variations. The maximum values of exothermic peak reduced when the Portland cement was replaced by RM. Deeper negative changes in the apparent porosity, water absorption, compressive strength and carbonation extent were also observed changing the W/B ratio from 0.47 to 0.58 in the 20RM-containing mortars. In fact, the compressive strength of mortar 20RM + 0.47W/B reduced 13% in comparison to RM-free mortar at 360 days, while 20RM + 0.58W/B reduced 46%. Although the extra voids created in the matrix by using 0.58W/B implied in a positive effect to the alkalisilica reaction, adjusting a dosage of water similar to the one of RM-free mortar makes RM an attractive alternative without compromise the materials properties studied in this work.

Influence of the pH on the corrosion crotection of epoxy-silica-zirconia sol-sel soatings spplied on EN AW-6063 aluminium alloy
Aluminium alloys of 6000 series can suffer severe corrosion in polluted (acidic) and/or marine environments and in contact with alkaline media like fresh cementitious materials. Therefore, architectural aluminium components are often coated, what requires its surface pre-treatment. Organic-inorganic hybrid (OIH) sol-gel coatings have been proposed as an effective, environmental compliant new pre-treatment for aluminium coating. In this work, an epoxy-silica-zirconia sol-gel coating was synthesized and applied on EN AW-6063 alloy. Cerium nitrate was incorporated as corrosion inhibitor. Cerium doped and undoped OIH coatings were exposed to neutral, acidic (pH~3) and alkaline (pH~10) chloride solutions. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and SEM/EDS characterization of coated samples revealed that the best performance is achieved in the neutral and the worst in the acidic solution. In the alkaline solution, the cerium doped coatings exhibited much better anticorrosive performance than the undoped ones, clearly evidencing the beneficial role of the corrosion inhibitor in this media.
