  • Wave run-up and overtopping of maritime structures (empirical models, physical model tests, numerical models and neural networks)

  • Coastal flood forecast and warning systems
  • Risk management in maritime infrastructure

Research and Professional Activity

Participates(ed) in 45 planned research projects, 25 contract studies and expert reports and 25 consultancy projects, promoted by national and international entities.

Scientific Orientation

She supervised/co-supervised 35 research internships, including: 1 Post-Doctoral (Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil), 2 PhDs (University Estadual Paulista and University of Granada), 12 MScs, 3 admissions to the Portuguese Institution of Civil Engineers, 3 PEPACs, 4 first degree final reports and 10 LNEC’s research grant holders of planned research projects. Co-supervised 17 MSc theses (IST, FCT/UNL, FCUL, FEUP, FCT/UC, IPS/ESTB, ISEL, University of Madeira, University de las Palmas de Gran Canária, Riga Technical University). At present, she is a co-supervisor of 3 MSc theses (FCT/UNL and FCUL) and of 2 PhD theses (IST and FEUP).

Relevant Publications

Her work has been published as: 2 theses (MSc and PhD), 6 chapters in books, 31 papers in international journals and 13 papers in national journals, more than 130 papers in proceedings of international and national conferences, 65 technical and scientific reports of LNEC, 4 research reports of the University of Liverpool, 34 consultancy reports developed at the UK and in Portugal, and 18 other publications.

Other scientific and technical Activities

  • Reviewer of papers in journals and conferences, among which are the following international journals: Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal, and Ocean Engineering (ASCE, USA), Maritime Engineering (ICE, UK), Journal of Coastal Research (CERF, USA). Also noteworthy is the IWA World Water Congress & Exhibition 2016 and the technical review of the "Sectorial Plan for Prevention and Risk Reduction".
  • Examiner in 3 PhD theses (University of Granada, University Estadual Paulista and IST), in 20 MSc theses and member of the Monitoring Commission of 2 PhD theses (IST and University Estadual Paulista).
  • Member of the Main Team of the FCT Doctoral Programme InfraRisk - Analysis and Mitigation of Risks in Infrastructures, in its first edition, 2013-2017.
  • Member of the Commission of LNEC Quality Mark (MQ LNEC), since 2016.
  • Integrates the database of independent experts of ANI – National Innovation Agency (SGP - Sistema de Gestão de Peritos), to participate in the evaluation of proposals, since 2016.
  • Effective Member of the Jury of 8 LNEC external competitions; Effective Member of the Jury of an external competition of the University of Azores; and Jury of proofs for the award of the Title of Specialist on Civil Construction and Civil Engineering area by the Polytechnic Institutes of Setubal, Lisbon and Leiria.

She joined the Scientific Committee of a national conference (MEFTE 2012).
  • Prepared and delivered 18 lectures, of which highlights "Wave overtopping of sea defences." Lecture held by invitation in the Faculty of Engineering, University of Liverpool.
  • Collaborated in several courses, amongst which "Design and Observation of Maritime and Port Structures", Cape Verde Engineering Laboratory, Praia, Santiago Island, May-June 2016.
