Areas of Research / Interest

Coastal Engineering and Maritime Hydraulics, more specifically long-term analyses of sea wave statistics, for the statistical analysis of sea wave climates and short-term analyses of wave records for numerical and physical simulations in a laboratory environment. Systematic observation and monitoring of maritime works.

Research and Professional Activity

He has more than 29 years of expertise in maritime hydraulics and coastal engineering. He has been involved since 1989 with two main aspects of the sea wave characterization, the long-term analysis of sea waves, for the study of statistical analysis of sea wave climates, and the short-term analysis of wave records for numerical and physical simulations in a laboratory environment. In his PhD he developed and classified, from a probabilistic or stochastic standpoint, the different subjects of the numerical and physical simulation on wave flumes or tanks and implemented on the computer a set of methods for the characterization and simulation of sea waves and processing wave data either from nature or from wave flumes in a integrated software package (SAM), which is now daily used in numerical and physical tests at the hydraulics laboratory of LNEC. He has participated in various systematic monitoring campaigns of maritime works, and have recently contributed to the modernization of its procedures, namely by introducing new features and functionalities such as the use of drones, the use of a mobile application for the introduction of campaign observations and a collaboration in the improvement of the ANOSOM-SIG database. He is currently responsible for the systematic maritime observation program (OSOM+). He has participated in more than 30 research projects, national and international funded international (Programmes H2020, MAST, EU-Framework, Interreg, AdI, NATO, etc.), and in more than 40 national end international consultancy projects (for Portugal, Angola, Algeria, Brazil, Cape Verde, France, Morocco, United Kingdom, etc.).

Relevant Publications

He has published the results of its work through a vast number of publications: 25 articles in national and international peer-reviewed journals, 90 papers in proceedings of national and international conferences, 2 book chapters and 120 technical and scientific reports.

Other scientific and technical Activities

  • Examiner in 4 MSc theses and 2 PhD theses; member of the Monitoring Commission in 3 PhD theses.
  • Effective member of the Jury of a vast number of internal and external competitions.
  • Participated in the organization of several scientific meetings, lectures and courses with emphasis for the course "Design and Observation of Maritime and Port Structures", held in June 2015 at the Civil Engineering Laboratory of São Tomé and Príncipe.
  • Prepared and delivered several lectures, both in Portugal and Brasil.
  • Responsible for the organization of various training courses on "LabVIEW programming”, conducted at LNEC, and on "LabVIEW and SAM applications” at the Federal University of Itajubá, Brazil.
  • Reviewer of papers in journals and conferences, among which are the following international journals: Journal of Coastal Research and Ocean Engineering.

  • Reviewer for national (MEFTE 2012 and MEFTE 2014) and international conferences (IMAM2005 - Maritime Transportation and Exploitation of Ocean and Coastal Resources, OMAE2008 - 27th International Conference on Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering and ISOPE2009 – 19th  International. Offshore Ocean and Polar Engineering Conference).
