Areas of Research / Interest

  • Prevention and mitigation of internal expansive chemical reactions in cement based-materials – alkali-aggregate and internal sulfate reactions
  • Conservation and characterization of materials with historical and architectural interest - mortars, plasters, mural paints, rocks, ceramic tiles and metals
  • Durability of concrete and mortars
  • Valorisation of minerals and industrial by-products
  • Mineralogical and microstructural characterization of materials

Research and Professional Activity

  • Participation in several national and international scientific and technological research projects
  • Principal investigator of two research projects with FCT funding concerning the prevention and mitigation of internal expansive reactions in cement-based materials
  • Participation in more than 40 contract research projects
  • Responsible for the installation of mineralogical and microstructural laboratories of materials characterization, and the reactivity to alkalis and internal sulfates in concrete.
