MorphFeed Project aims at contributing to answer the question: how will estuarine margins respond to possible climate change impacts? Considering that each morpho sedimentary unit has a different dynamical response to controlling environmental factors, the final goal is the development of a conceptual model for morphological response to different climate change and anthropogenic intervention scenarios. To pursue this objective a multidisciplinary and integrative approach, based on the following hypotheses, will be applied: 1) present day estuarine morphology and sediment distribution resulted of recent geologic evolution including climatic variations; 2) estuarine margins are dynamic systems where physical, chemical and biologic processes interact; 3) nowadays, human intervention are one of prime factors that affects these margins.

O projeto MorFeed visa melhorar o conhecimento sobre a resposta morfodinâmica das margens estuarinas ao possível impacto das alterações climáticas. Considerando que há uma resposta dinâmica dos diversos elementos morfo-sedimentares que constituem as margens aos fatores ambientais, o objetivo final do projeto será desenvolver um modelo conceptual que traduza a resposta morfológica das margens a diferentes cenários de alterações climáticas. Para tal, será aplicada uma metodologia integrada e multidisciplinar baseada em vários pressupostos: a morfologia e distribuição sedimentar atual resulta da história geológica recente, que incluiu variações climáticas; as margens estuarinas são sistemas dinâmicos onde processos físicos, químicos e biológicos interagem; atualmente, a intervenção humana é um dos principais fatores que afetam estes sistemas.

Estuário do tejo

The Tagus estuary (Figure - google earth) socio-economic relevance and its morphological and sedimentary characteristics make this system an excellent testbed for the proposed methodology. The Tagus estuary is one of the largest estuaries in Europe and its margins extend for about 200km, from the mouth to the upward limit of the saline intrusion in normal meteorological conditions. Present day morphological and sedimentary contrasts of its margins result from the estuary recent geological evolution and cohesive and non-cohesive sediment dynamics associated to tidal currents and locally-generated waves. The natural evolutionary pattern of estuarine margins has changed significantly during the last century due to the harbour facilities expansion, and the urban and industrial development.

Estuarine margins typification based on remote sensing techniques supported by field surveys, will give a picture of the present day natural margins organization (including intertidal and shallow subtidal plant and algal cover) and human imposed alterations. Further, present day hydrodynamic processes and sediment budget will be characterized through the application of numerical models and empirical formulations, complemented with field data. The long- (secular) and medium-term (decennial) morphological evolutionary trends and rates of intertidal and subtidal areas will be assessed thought different approaches, as short coring and dating for sedimentation rates assessment, and image processing techniques to determine shoreline evolution. These results will be compared and evaluated against sediment input from the Tagus watershed. Regional-scale scenarios of climate changes, supported by previous studies for Portugal (SIAM project) and IPCC projections, will be constructed, as well as socio-economic scenarios for estuarine margins development. The impact of these scenarios in the hydrodynamic controlling factors, sediment budget and, ultimately, in the morphodynamics of estuarine margins will also be analyzed with numerical and empirical tools. Integration of the results will enable the development of a simple conceptual model of estuarine margins dynamical response to changes in environmental controlling factors and anthropogenic intervention. The results of this project are expected to constitute a valuable tool for integrated management of estuaries, established in the recent law of Land Use Plan of Estuaries (Law 129/2008, July 21), in future predictions and in the definition of mitigation or adaptation strategies.

Goals
The project specific objectives are:

to determine the past evolution of estuarine margins at different time scales (secular and decennial), concerning morphology, sediment content, vegetation communities and human occupation;
to characterise the physical and biological environmental controlling factors and the sediment budget for present day conditions;
to determine the morphodynamic response of various types of estuarine margins to climate change and anthropogenic scenarios;
to develop methodological orientations for future research, namely in predictive models development.

Info MOWADI - 3D MOrphodynamic modelling of WAve Dominated Inlets

MOWADI aims at: 1) developing a 3D morphodynamic modelling system, incorporating recent developments on wave-current interactions; 2) determining the strengths and weaknesses of these systems compared to their 2D counterparts; 3) improving our understanding on the behaviour of wave-dominated tidal inlets at various time scales, combining model applications with field and remote sensing data; 4) contribute to support management decisions on two specific Portuguese inlets.

To reach these goals, we will first integrate the latest theoretical developments on wave-current interaction in 3D on a hydrodynamic community model (SELFE). Then, based on the existing modelling systems available at LNEC, a state of the art 3D and parallelized morphodynamic modelling systems will be built, with the objective of improving morphological predictions and the understanding of the dynamics at wave-dominated inlets. The modelling system will be applied at two highly dynamic wave-dominated inlets, which combine strong socio-economical and environmental issues. Although these two systems show some morphological similarities, they display distinct morphological behaviours. The Albufeira Inlet closes naturally every winter, while the Óbidos Inlet only closes exceptionally. These contrasting behaviours are probably due to differences in the ratios between wave energy and tidal prisms at the two inlets, but this hypothesis has to be verified with the modelling system.

For the two sites, field measurement of waves for different positions within a cross-shore profile will be carried out, in order to investigate the characteristics of wave breaking. Wave-induced and tidal currents will be sampled in several positions of the water column, using an ADCP placed on the ebb-deltas. Synchronously, a bathymetric/topographic survey and a characterization of sediment grain-size repartition will be carried out. Morphological changes after the field experiments will be remotely and qualitatively investigated using monthly satellite images.

In addition to providing a first level of understanding of the dynamics of the two inlets, these field measurements will allow for a fine calibration and validation of the modelling system. Six months morphodynamic simulations will then be performed, starting from the baseline bathymetry sampled during the field campaigns and forcing the modelling systems with results from tidal and wave regional models routinely used at LNEC. Morphological predictions will be compared to the morphological changes deduced from aerial photographs and satellite images. Once morphological predictions are judged satisfying, the modelling system will be used to perform synthetic tests (e.g. tuning the wave conditions or the tidal range) in order to investigate the physical processes responsible for the morphological changes observed.

Finally, a synthesis will be made on the knowledge gained throughout the project and recommendation will be proposed to improve the management of the two selected systems. More generic conclusions, applicable to other tidal inlets, will also be proposed.

The goals of PAC:MAN are to investigate:

past accident data to develop environmental indicators of spill-prone atmospheric and oceanographic conditions in the Iberian shelf and to validate them in a coastal system;
the usefulness of high-accuracy modelling systems for risk prevention and early-warning, including the relevant processes in a coastal oil spill;
the feasibility, advantages and scalability of an alert system based on recent communication technologies;

the usefulness of information technology systems to integrate and provide relevant environmental information on the ecological elements at risk, and to assess how these innovative aspects can be integrated in a risk management early-warning and alert system for spill accidents in coastal regions.

The R&D project SI-GeA aims at developing an intelligent system for monitoring and decision support in real time of all the relevant information for the management of urban systems for sewage and stormwater, including gravitational collectors, pumping systems and treatment plants. This information comes from remote monitoring networks, operational data from said networks and real-time forecasting systems of the behavior of infrastructures and media receivers. The system will be designed to meet the requirements of frequent use of information by managers, allowing as well the creation of products on demand in real time.
