Research and Professional Activity

  • Research developed applying knowledge of metrology, physics, applied mathematics and numerical computing in various areas of civil engineering and in cooperation with other organizations, in international research projects.
  • In the context of applied metrology, research has been developed aiming at the traceability of scientific instrumentation and the development and validation of methods applied to a variety of quantities (dimensional and geometric, temperature and radiation, mass, pressure, force, optics, anemometry, among others). Studies associated with large infrastructures with measurements in dynamic regime stand out, namely in aerodynamics, flow rate, flow speed and seismic tests. In the context of Metrology applied in hydrology and hydraulics, he coordinates the LNEC Metrological Hydraulics Unit, which supports the recognition of LNEC as a Portuguese Designated Institute for the quantities flow rate and flow velocity of liquids.
  • In the field of quality and accreditation, he has over 30 years of experience, as coordinator of laboratories accredited by ISO/IEC 17025, as a management systems auditor and in advanced consultancy activities. He collaborated in the creation of metrological infrastructures in Macau, in the Autonomous Regions of Madeira and the Azores and in several Portuguese-speaking countries (S. Tomé and Príncipe, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Angola and Guinea-Bissau). He performs the functions of Quality Manager for the Management of LNEC-EM Laboratories and has had relevant roles in several international organizations, in coordination and as member of technical committees.
  • He has a considerable number of papers in international scientific journals, publications in books, participation in more than 100 international conferences and workshops, with oral presentations and as a guest speaker, he has been an editor in leading journals, a member of scientific committees and a reviewer at international conferences.
