Intercomparison of sediment transport formulas in current and combined wave-current conditions
The 2D horizontal morphodynamic modeling system MORSYS2D simulates bottom topography evolution in coastal zones. Sand fluxes are computed with different practical formulas, either for current dominated (e.g, Ackers & White, van Rijn) or combined wave-current flows (e.g., Soulsby van Rijn). Although sensitivity analyses of bottom topography changes in terms of the transport formulas used have already been done, a comparison of the sediment fluxes computed with the different formulations, considering the same flow conditions and using the parameterizations considered in the model (e.g, bottom roughness, bottom stress) is lacking. With that purpose, we have conceptualized a suitable range of wave and current conditions above a sand bed composed of uniform sediment that is characteristic of the conditions encountered in estuaries, tidal inlets and continental shelves, and applied the several flux formulations. To assess the differences obtained, the average value and the standard deviation were computed for each flow condition. This exercise enabled us to identify, for different parameter ranges, the transport formulations which are consistent with one another and those that deviate the most from the mean. This information is useful in practical applications by defining conditions for optimal formula performance.

Is strategic asset management applicable to small and medium utilities?
Urban water infrastructures provide essential services to modern societiesand represent a major portion of the value of municipal physical assets.Managing these assets rationally is therefore fundamental for thesustainability of the services and for the economy of societies.

Long-term data management and the safety of large civil engineering structures
Large civil engineering structures are continuously monitored to assure their structural safety. The Portuguese National Laboratory for Civil Engineering currently monitors several types of structures, likeconcrete dams, bridges or other transportation infrastructures. The consequences of a structural failure are potentially catastrophic, varying from lossof life or environmental damage to high economic impacts. The management and preservation of structural monitoring data is crucial to support decisions concerning the structural safety. However, preserving data also entails several risks and threats

Materiais inovadores

Methodology for estimating run-up and flooding at the costal zone using the GUIOMAR system: application to Vale do Lobo beach
This paper presents the results of the study performed for estimating the run-up and flood levelsin a stretch of Vale do Lobo beach, located at Loulé Municipality, in the Algarve region. The study started by defining the offshore wave conditions in the area, based upon data collectedduring 1991 by the Portuguese Hydrographic Institute with a directional wave-buoy located atFaro. These conditions were then transferred to the vicinity of Vale do Lobo beach by using theGUIOMAR system, namely its SWAN module. GUIOMAR is an integrated system for modellingwave propagation in coastal engineering studies. It is currently being developed to providesupport for a sustainable planning and management of the costal area. Two empirical formulations were applied for estimating the run-up at Vale do Lobo beach during1991: one based on field data and the other based on physical model tests. Two water levelswere considered and a sensitivity analysis was performed to evaluate the differences betweenthe two formulations and the impact of some of the parameters on the end results. The floodlevels were also estimated.

Microscopic characterisation of old mortars from the Santa Maria Church in Évora
Evora Cathedral (one of the most emblematic monuments of Evora - Portugal) has suffered several conservation and restoration interventions through the ages, without, however, any type of previous knowlegde about mortars and materials used. This work was carried out in order to identify the mortars composition in different locations, which were attributed to different construction or conservation periods. The characterization methodology involved a multidisciplinary set of chemical, physical, microstructural and mechanical techniques, and gave special attention to the use of microstructural characterization techniques, particularly petrographical analysis and scanning electron microscopy for the identification of the mortars constituents as well as in the evaluation of the state of conservation. The test results showed that two types of aerial binders were used, dolomitic and calcitic limes, the former being predominant. The aggregates used have a siliceous nature and are similar in composition to the granodiorites of Evoras region. The mortars differ in the aggregate contents and, in some cases, crushed bricks were used as an additive.
