A turbulância atmosférica introduz perturbações neste processo simplificado induzindo variações na velocidade e direcção do vento, podendo dar origem a reversões do escoamento.

The Carmo convent (XIV century) is founded on a silty-sand formation subjected to severalnegative impacts that have weakened the stiffness and strength characteristics of the local soils. A previous finiteelement analysis was carried out to assess the stability conditions for constructing a new underground railroadpassing 20 meters below the convent foundations. The results indicated that upper soils might be, in some areas,highly uncompressed and very close to failure or in a plastic state. To confirm these and to try mappingthe higher uncompressed zones, various instrumental measurements and in situ tests were carried out, includingan extensive crosshole seismic tomography survey on 26 crosshole sections to obtain their P-wave velocityfield. In general, the seismic tomographies obtained validated the finite element results.A jet grout treatment test was carried out at a zone under the convent foundations where the seismic tomographyhad revealed very low P-wave velocity. Afterwards, the crosshole seismic test was repeated and the correspondingtomography showed that upper soil velocities had increased to values near the velocities fordeeper (and less disturbed) soils. Additionally, three crosshole seismic tomographies were performed at a controlsite with a geological setting similar to the convent foundations, but not subjected to the same negativeimpacts. The P-wave velocities obtained for these undisturbed soils are about the same as the velocities forthe convent foundations after the grout treatment, which confirms the test injection efficiency in improvingsoil characteristics below the Carmo convent foundations.

Descreve-se um modelo de transporte para sistemas costeiros, particularmente apropriado em situações de fortes gradientes de concentração. Este modelo baseia-se numa formulação Euleriana-Lagrangiana para malhas não-estruturadas e apresenta as seguintes características: 1) discretização por volumes finitos e tracking de elevada precisão; 2) malhas distintas para o escoamento e transporte; 3) use da técnica de flux-corrected transporte ou de filtro não-linear para remoção de oscilações. Analisam-se as propriedades numéricas através da análise do erro de truncatura e de um teste numérico. A combinação de várias técnicas numéricas permite obter estabilidade incondicional, conservação de massa e elevada precisão, evitando simultaneamente oscilações numéricas.Palavras-Chave: Volumes finitos; métodos Eulerianos-Lagrangianos; oscilações numéricas.
