O texto apresenta projetos de pesquisa sobre azulejos históricos, atualmente desenvolvidos no LNEC (Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil) em Lisboa-Portugal. Tem como objectivo exemplificar como os resultados analíticos podem auxiliar os restauradores na escolha e adoção de procedimentos mais adequados a cada caso. Apresenta também um estudo de caso onde a análise instrumental ajudou os historiadores a aceitar ou rejeitar hipóteses anteriormente estruturadas.

Em Portugal existe ainda um grande número de pontes metálicas antigas, construídas durante o século XIX ou inícios do século XX, que urge manter, pelo seu simbolismo e importância histórica, mas também porque muitas delas fazem ainda parte das infraestruturas nacionais rodoviárias ou ferroviárias, permanecendo assim vitais para a economia nacional.Estas estruturas requerem ocasionalmente intervenções de reparação e/ou de reforço devido a: i) terem de suportar cargas de valor superior às previstas no seu dimensionamento, ii) terem sofrido uma diminuição significativa da sua resistência pela ação de fatores ambientais ou associados à sua utilização, ou, ainda, iii) por se pretender que possam assegurar condições de segurança exigidas pela regulamentação atual, por vezes mais exigentes que as consideradas no projeto inicial.A avaliação estrutural da segurança das pontes antigas requer o conhecimento das características mecânicas dos materiais metálicos utilizados na sua construção. Historical renders are exposed to several degradation processes that can lead to a wide range of anomalies, such as scaling, detachments, and pulverization. Among the common anomalies, the loss of cohesion and of adhesion are usually identified as the most difficult to repair; these anomalies still need to be deeply studied to design compatible, durable, and sustainable conservation treatments. The restitution of render cohesion can be achieved using consolidating products. Nevertheless, repair treatments could induce aesthetic alterations, and, therefore, are usually followed by chromatic reintegration. This work aims to study the effectiveness of mineral products as consolidants for lime-based mortars and simultaneously as chromatic treatments for pigmented renders. The studied consolidating products are prepared by mixing air lime, metakaolin, water, and mineral pigments. The idea of these consolidating and coloring products rises from a traditional lime-based technique, the limewash, widely diffused in southern Europe and in the Mediterranean area. Consolidating products were applied and tested on lime-based mortar specimens with a low binder–aggregate ratio and therefore with reduced cohesion. A physico-mechanical, microstructural, and mineralogical characterization was performed on untreated and treated specimens, in order to evaluate the efficacy and durability of the treatments. Accelerated aging tests were also performed to assess consolidant durability, when subjected to aggressive conditions. Results showed that the consolidants tested are compatible, effective, and possess good durability.

The initial geometry of a railway track continually degrades over its life-cycle. Changes in the track alignment give rise tovariations in the dynamic axle load which accelerate track degradation, with consequences for maintenance and avail-ability of the line. This behaviour is particularly evident at some critical locations that are associated with abrupt changesin the track
