Dynamic analysis of concrete dams: fluid structure displacement based interaction models
The hydrodynamic interaction between a solid (dam and foundation) and a fluid(reservoir) should be considered whenever the reservoir is present. A fluid displacement-basedformulation is presented, and two fluid elements are proposed: an 8-node fluid cubic elementsub-integrated (F8N-1GP), and an 8-node mixed discretization cubic element formed by twoindependent 5 tetrahedra overlay (F8N-MDE). A forced vibration analysis, and a maximumdesign earthquake equivalent loading, are carried out in two different dams. The performanceof the proposed fluid displacement-based finite elements is compared with the performanceobtained with the degenerated solid (DS) concept, and with the simplified Westergaard addedmass approach. It is shown that the SD approach can lead to erroneous pressure values at thefluid domain, and that the penalty term which prevents circulation modes needs to be consideredwhen less regular meshes are adopted in the fluid discretization.

Energy performance indicators of wastewater treatment: a field study with 17 Portuguese plants
The energy costs usually represent the second largest part of the running costs of a wastewatertreatment plant (WWTP). It is therefore crucial to increase the energy efficiency of theseinfrastructures and to implement energy management systems, where quantitative performancemetrics, such as performance indicators (PIs), play a key role. This paper presents energy PIs whichcover the unit energy consumption, production, net use from external sources and costs, and theresults used to validate them and derive their reference values. The results of a field study with 17Portuguese WWTPs (5-year period) were consistent with the results obtained through aninternational literature survey on the two key parcels of the energy balance

Evaporation from porous building materials and its cooling potential
Evaporative cooling is a traditional strategy to improve summer comfort, which has gained renewed relevance in the context of the transition to a greener economy. Here, the potential for evaporative cooling of common porous building materials, like natural stone and ceramic brick, is evaluated. The work has relevance also to the protection of built heritage because evaporation underlies the problems of dampness and salt crystallization, which are so harmful and frequent in this heritage. It was observed that the drying rate of the materials is, in some cases, higher than the evaporation rate of a free water surface. Surface area measurements by a three-dimensional optical technique suggested, as probable cause of this behavior, that surface irregularity gives rise to a large effective surface of evaporation in the material. Surface temperature measurements by infrared were performed afterward during evaporation experiments outside during a hot summer day in Lisbon. Their results indicate that ordinary building materials can be very efficient evaporative media and, thus, may help in achieving higher energy efficiency while maintaining a simultaneous constructive or architectural function.

Evolution of the hydrodynamics of the Tagus estuary (Portugal) in the 21st century
The ongoing rise in sea level affects tidal propagation and circulation in estuaries, and these changes can have far reachingconsequences on the sediment dynamics, water quality and extreme water levels. This study aims at anticipating the evolutionof the tidal dynamics in the Tagus (Portugal) in the 21st century, in particular due to sea level rise (SLR). The existence of aresonance mode of about 8 hours in this estuary, that selectively amplifies both semi-diurnal and quarter-diurnal tidal constituents, makes the response of the Tagus estuary to SLR unique. The study was conducted with a shallow water model, forced bypresent and future conditions, namely higher mean sea levels and an extrapolated bathymetry based on present sedimentationrates. Model results showed that SLR will significantly affect tidal asymmetry, in particular because the intertidal area candecrease by up to 40% by the end of the 21st century. As a result, the strong ebb-dominance of this estuary will decrease significantly. This evolution of tidal asymmetry will be counteracted by the effect of sedimentation of the salt-marsh areas. Also,SLR will enhance the resonance in the Tagus estuary. As a consequence, extreme water levels will be higher than the sum ofpresent levels with the SLR.
