Agriculture and urban water supply are the primary sources of pressure on renewable water resources. In the agriculture sector, for higher water and energy savings in irrigation, it is essential to efficiently manage collective irrigation systems (CISs) for water storage, transport and distribution to farmers. However, unlike the urban water systems, there is a lack of an integrated approach that quantifies water and energy inefficiencies and supports planning and monitoring improvement measures. The AGIR project aims to develop a performance assessment system that quantifies the water and energy use efficiency in collective irrigation systems. Made up of specific performance metrics and reference values, the performance assessment system will improve the efficiency of water and energy use and support the water user associations in planning future investments.
