Following the damage that occurred in the port of Lajes das Flores during the passage of hurricane Lorenzo, it was felt the need to protect at least the rooting of the port's jetty, in order to provide the port with some operability that would guarantee the population of Ilha das Flores can continue to be served by sea. Tests in physical model of the proposed solution were carried out at LNEC in 2020.
With the beginning of the construction work, it was realised that the conditions found on the ground were different from those that had been considered in the project, which led to its reformulation and a reassessment with tests on a two-dimensional physical model (2nd series of tests, held in 2021).
The objective of these tests was to evaluate the conditions of overtopping of the new solution defined by the designer, as well as the pressures exerted by sea agitation on the vertical structures of the set of works. Four profiles were tested, corresponding to two different locations.
